I have avocado seeds.  I would love to plant some tree's.  My question is how.  I say we shoud plant them in the ground out by the Apple tree's and Pomagranets.  My husband says that we have to put toothpicks in them and place them over water and get them started in the house.  How would you suggest that we start?

My experience is in line with what your husband is saying. They're really fun to grow too! If you put the seed wide end down in water (so top pointy part of seed is up) it will start to root. You can stick 3-4 toothpicks out the sides then rest on top of jar or glass. If you fill the jar/glass with water, the bottom of the seed should be under water and the top out of water. Keep the water level ful. Soon the seed will split and grow roots while the tree sprouts out the top. Get a good root system going and transplant into a pot for a bit. You can transplant outside once you have a good strong tree. Make sure you are in the right growing zone to plant it outside and make sure you do it at the right time of year for your area and for the tree. I never made it that far because we live where it's Waaaaay too cold for avocados to live.

Good Luck!

What kind of climate do you need to grow avacados? Just out of curiosity.
