The election to fill 2 school board seats is tomorrow, polls are open from 7:00am-8:00pm. This year the school is looking at a $7.5 million deficit because of the $34/student the state took away and the failure of the bond. There is still the threat of the state taking away another $125/student which would be devastating. Those running for the 2 seats have very different ways of cutting costs, this election is VERY important for the future of our school district. The quality of our schools effects everyone who lives in the district, regardless of whether they have children in the schools. PLEASE GO OUT AND VOTE TOMORROW!!!!Mark Slavens, who was polled to be a very favorable incumbent, is no longer eligible as he took a judge appointment from the state. His name will still be on the ballot though and there are still some people who say they are voting for him even though he's no longer eligible. Nancy Eggenberger is endorsed by the Canton Observer. She either had or still does have kids at Tonda Elementary and the staff has nothing but great things to say about her and what a positive role she'd have on the board if elected. http://observer-eccentric.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070506/OPINION01/705060505/1192/NEWS03Bruce Koldys is running, he doesn't have any kids in the district and is looking to get his demographic, of those in the district without children, more represented. He understands that even those who live here that don't have children in the schools, they should still be supporting a quality education program for our community. http://observer-eccentric.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070429/NEWS03/704290327&SearchID=73280367469908Kurt Heise is running and he's new to the district.Larry Martin is running and it sounds like he's concerned with the curriculum of our schools, whether or not it's preparing kids for the global economy.http://observer-eccentric.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070503/NEWS15/705030673&SearchID=73280367469908Richard Ham-Kucharski is also running as an incumbent, and I've heard many of the staff at our schools have a very unfavorable opinion on him. He's looking to cut the teacher salaries by 6% and eliminate their step-up pay to reduce the deficit. He's been quoted in the Observer as saying he thinks our teachers get paid better than those in surrounding districts. This is just my personal opinion, but from what I've been reading about him the last few months, he just sounds like an ass.Last letter on the page: http://www.hometownlife.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070506/OPINION03/705060503/1192/NEWS03Here are other articles from the Observer on the subject:http://observer-eccentric.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070503/OPINION01/705030681&SearchID=73280367742281http://observer-eccentric.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070429/NEWS15/704290481&SearchID=73280367469908
