Magnesium Sulfate

In July of 2002 I went into preterm labor with my first pregnancy.  I was 32 weeks along and they decided to do Magnesium Sulfate first to see if that would stop things but it didn't. I was then put on Terb pump which seemed to help until insurance stopped covering it at 36 weeks.  On August 1 2002 my son was born at 36 weeks gestation.  He had a problem with his legs and arms shaking much like when you would scratch a dogs itchy spot and we were very worried but the Dr's had no clue on the cause.  I didn't begin to really question anything until we noticed he was very cranky and only allowed certain people to hold him, his talking was delayed but he was walking by 9 months.  He seemed somewhat social but over all he was a very shy little kid.  He started getting signs that something really wasn't right the older he was getting.  By 3 years old I was questioning everything and then my niece was given the Magnesium and her son was born premature and has behavioral issues and developmenttally has been a challenge although he isn't PDD-NOS he is possible bipolar and ADHD that is obvious.  Anyways, after talking to others I started really wondering if maybe the meds I was given in preterm labor affected my son.  He is going to be turning 9 and has so many issue to work through, I can't help but feel guilty thinking maybe it was the meds I was given.

A note about the terb pump, I had that medication with my second son but not the magnesium and my second son is as typical as they come not a single sign of aspergers so I am thinking if might be the magnesium that is a factor here.

Hi there, I have three kids, the first I took the Terb orally only for a month after an emergency appendectomy , she was born with no issues and is normal and healthy.

The last two I had bleeding, pre-term labor and they started me on oral terb and Oral Mag, then i went into the hospital where I received IV Mag with the terb piggy-backed (injections into the IV pump).  They were both born a month early by c-section with respiratory distress, elev. bili, my daughter #3 picked up secondary infections from an umbilical IV.   #2 stayed in the NICU for two weeks and #3 stayed in for one.  They were delayed with everything... #2 more than #3.  Both are on the spectrum and pretty high-functioning.

My issue is that there has never been a large study undertaken to look at these medications as environmental triggers for Autism in children.  The medical community seems to have it's head in the sand on this issue.  There is also the big problem of the pharmaceutical industries undue influence on the medical community.  We desperatley need an objective study and more caution on th epart of OB's before they rush to give these medications to patients, especially to patients with one or more children on the spectrum.

It bothers me to no end that the very medicines they pushed on me to prevent pre-term (and in my case they were born a month early anyway) and protect the health of our babies may have been the trigger for their life-long disability.
