Hi there,
My name is Nikki and I have two great kids. I have a 4 year old son recently diagnosed with autism and a 9 month old daughter. While I was pregnant with my 4 year old, I had a lot of preterm contractions. I was constantly in the hospital and if I wasn't I was on bedrest at home. I was given terbutaline in the hospital and I took it every 4 hours at home to stop the contractions. My son is developmentally delayed and has been very slow at all his milestones. I have been telling his doctor since he was about 6 months old, but everyone seemed to act like I was making a big deal out of nothing. I knew really since he was 6 months old that he was not doing what other children were doing. He is now doing occupational therapy because he has poor fine motor skills, he does speech therapy, and behavior modification because he has a tendency to be really aggressive. He is sooooooooo very hyper and has been since he was a wee baby. I have been trying to tell everyone that it is from the terb that I took during pregnancy and they all said if it was bad the doctor would have told me and wouldn't have given it. Well here we are and everything I read is about terbutaline and developmental delay, etc. I am so glad that this group has been started. Sorry so long, just wanted to give my story. I'd love to hear yours.

  • I am so glad I ran across this group!  I have often times wondered if the Magnesium Sulfate I was on when I was pregnant w/ my ds has caused his health problems.  They had to induce my labor at 38 weeks because of pre-eclampsia.  They started me on the Mags when they started my induction, therefore, I was on it for 14 hours before I delivered him.  It made me feel horrible...worse than the pre-eclampsia itself did!  He is 9 now, but was diagnosed w/ PDD NOS (Autism) at the age of 4 1/2 y.o.  However, after he got his 4 month old shots, is when he regressed.  I knew from then on, something was not right!  Mother instinct told me so!  After he received his 4 month shots, he stopped cooing, interacting w/ dh and I :( , started having recurring ear infections, and also started having infantile spasms.  He has had 3 sets of ear tubes and his adenoids taken out, all by the tender age of 6 years old.  Sorry so long, but wanted to share our story.  I also have a 4 y.o. dd that is NT.  Married to dh for almost 13 years...the 23rd of this month.

  • Hi, my name is susan, I have 3 wonderful children. During all pregnancy i was taking the terbutaline through an infusion pump. My 3 year old was diagnosed with pervasive develpmental disorder wich is an autism spectrum disorder and sensory processing disorder as well. she was diagnosed when she was 18 months.. , my 10 year old daughter has a learning disability  and dyslexia. My 5 year old son so far has been fine until this past weekend. I had taken him to see an neurologist for severe night sweats and headaches. sure enough she tested his fine motor skills and he lacks a little behind. so another chapter has opened up in my life. I often wondered if terbutaline has anything to do with my childrens delays and disorders. I thought that i was crazy. i am so happy that this group is here. I can actually meet moms who can relate...

i  hope to make new friends.

    bye for now.

    susan....

  • I took terbutaline for a short while while on bedrest for ptl.  I hated the way it made me feel so i stopped taking it.  On my own.  Against doc.  I went into real labor on my own 1 week after my "due date".  I also figured that if i felt this way on the terb...what it was doing to the baby.  Funny that you mentioned baby was really hyper b/c I feel this way about my 7 mos ds.  People say..."he's a boy" its normal.  So far though thats the only thing that has gotten my attention.  That terrible drug made me feel like I was racing and now I wonder if thats why he is racing now!  He just doesn't stop going.

Glad there is some conversation now in this group.  Don't be shy!

  • Hi!  Another new member dealing with many questions about whether terbutaline might have caused the problems my children are dealing with.  I was given terbutaline with two of my pregnancies, and both of those children have been diagnossed with a neurological condition.  My youngest does not appear to have any issues, but I did not have the medication while pregnant with him.

I am just so angry that I was not given all of the information available to make an educated choice.
