  • My son is 3 1/2 and he had Fragile X Syndrome. He still is unable to speak. He is very vocal with sounds and noices just not words. We have been using ASL to try to get him to communicate his wants and needs with us as well as his pre-school. So far he is able to understand and repeat about 20 signs. We hope to get him doing more but not sure how much effort the school is really putting forth.

Looking forward to getting some advice and tips and hopefully sharing some of his words will you soon.

  • Hello new to the group.  I have an almost 4 year old daughter and a 3 month old son.  My daughter has global developmental delay and seizures.  We still have no diagnosis but are leaning toward CP.  She has very few words about 5 and her understanding is low. We are using pecs and sign language hoping she will catch on to one or the other shortly.

  • I AM A MOTHER OF 2 BOYS, AGES 9 AND 13. MY 13 YEAR OLD HAS ASPERGER'S SYNDROME AND HYPERLEXIA. AS A BABY, HE MET HIS MILESTONES. AROUND 15 MONTHS, HE WAS NO LONGER TALKING OR WALKING WITHOUT SUPPORT. HIS DOCTOR AND I GOT HIM INTO AN EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM. THEY TAUGHT BOTH OF US HOW TO SIGN AND PROVIDED THE THERAPY THAT WAS NEEDED. ONCE HE BEGAN SPEAKING AGAIN, WE STOPPED USING SIGN. MY NEXT EXPERIENCE WITH SIGN, WAS WORKING WITH A SPECIAL NEEDS CLASS. I REALIZED HOW RUSTY MY SIGNING WAS. NOW I AM TAKING ASL IN COLLEGE. MY 13 YEAR OLD WAS REINTRODUCED TO SIGN BY HIS TEACHER, SHE WAS AMAZED HOW FAST HE PICKED IT UP. ONCE I TOLD HER HIS STORY, SHE UNDERSTOOD. MY YOUNGEST, HAS NO DELAYS. HE IS ALSO INTERESTED IN SIGNING. WE ATTEND LOCAL DEAF EVENTS WITH MY ASL CLASS, AND MY BOYS ARE USUALLY THE FIRST TO START SIGNING TO MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY. I AM THANKFUL FOR OUR REAQUANTANCE WITH ASL.

  • Hi ladies!  I'm Meg from VA.  I have an 8 month old son and am married to a wonderful man.  I also work as a pediatric speech language pathologist with many children on my caseload under the age of 4.  This is truly my passion in life - helping childen with delays communicate with their families.  Good luck to all of you!

  • Hi everyone!!  I have two boys ages 5&2 and one on the way (hopefully a girl).  My 2 year old will be turning 3 Dec 14 he has a speech therapist from Soonerstart come to the house and work with him once a week.  Before she came he was saying very little at all and now he has learned some more words.  She won't be able to work with him anymore once he turns 3.  He will be transitioning to the school therapist at that time.  He has Oral Dysphagia.  I am looking for more information on this and other mothers who are going through this as well.

  • Hello.  My name is Lyn.  My son Connor is 2 and has been diagnosed with autism.  He is currently in speech therapy.  Just recently I was educated on apraxia so that is my next step of testing for language.  My family and I are using the Signing Time videos to teach ourselves sign language.  My son uses some words and others he signs.  Of course, I wish that we had started using sign language from birth when my girlfriend (who we thought was just wanting to be "different") suggested it for all of our kids.

Anyway.  I'm just trying to get over the "I wish I would have..."

  • Hello,

I am Christine.  I'm mom to Julia (5 years old).   Julia is a multimode communicator.  She uses Sign (a combo of ASL and signed exact english) and her Dynavox MT4 and also verbalizes a couple of words.  Her speaking ability is limited due to a craniofacial anomoly and related airway problems. (she has a trach.).  she's in her 3rd year of preschool and doing well.    She used PECs for a long time and then transitioned smoothly over  to the Dynavox after we "inherited" it from a friend who's autistic son no longer needed since his speech improved so much.

We are seen by a AAC team at a local childrens hospital and Julia's IEP includes time with an AAC consultant.  This has been crucial to the success of integrating the Dynavox into her day.   At home we mostly use sign because it is easier and quicker but we try to incorporate Dynavox usage during a homework time period and when we have playdates here.

Since it's likely she will always rely on AAC, I'm interested in keeping up on all the latest technologies. (smaller, faster devices especially).

  • hello! i work with children with autism.  between my 2 clients, one has begun speaking, though often misses consonant sounds, but is slowly getting them with drills and practice.  the other is using sign language currently after using the PECS system.  his words just won't come out. for instance when prompted to say "open" it clearly comes out "mama" and anything else will be verbalized like a T sound or he'll spit.  so we're sticking to the sign language for now!
i hope to get to talk to some of you. take care and have a wonderful weekend!

  • hey there! I haven't talked to you in a while but I am excited to find and join your group. This is a great group for me to get information on speech resources :) I look forward to going through all the posts you have up. thank you for having this group.

Zack will be four in May, dx'd at 16 mos with PDD-NOS and dx'd again  at 20 mos with Autism. He is non-verbal, makes some attempts to communicate verbally with his PECS but progress in this department has been sloooooow. we are looking into getting him a mercury or some other augmentive device to use at school and see how that works out. Our goal is getting him to speak- not unlike everyone else's I suppose :)
Thanks again girl for having all these resources :)
