  • A little about my son and our current situation

I am the mother of a 3.5 year old boy. He was diagnosed with autism at 2 years old. But recently as I was researching online I found out about hyperlexia and it fits my son’s description. My son has an obsession with letters and numbers. By the time he was 2.5 he could identify the letters of the alphabet, numbers, shapes and colors. He loves books, letters, and numbers. He knows the entire alphabet in uppercase and lowercase and the sound of each letter.  He is already starting to read and loves to sound out words. When I ask him to read a word he replies lets sound it. He will sound the letters and put them together and then say the word. Yesterday his grandfather gave him an Easter basket and it had a bag of skittles in it. When I gave him the skittles and asked him what is this? He could not tell me because the bag was different, they were sour skittles, therefore I asked him to read it to me and he looked at the writing and responded skittles. He has such an amazing memory he knows his name, address, age, date of birth, his phone number, his daddy’s phone number, his mothers name, his fathers name, his sisters name and memorizes  every ones name ones he meet them. I notice when he was almost 3years old that he had memorized all the books that we read him at bed time. He can differentiate between different languages that he’s had exposure to. He knows things that I don’t even know he knows. He surprises me and his speech pathologist all the time.  He learns things so fast but yet he is having a very hard time with Boy vs. Girl, Me vs. You
I am very unhappy with his school because when we met the last time for a parent and teacher conference his OT said that my son had mastered the letters of his name and I had to correct her and say no he mastered the letters of the alphabet. I also explained to his teacher that my son was staring to read and she turned to the speech pathologist and told her that it was her department the speech pathologist turned back to her and said not my department and then his teacher responded I wouldn’t know what to do.  I also see a great deal of progress from the one hr a week that he spends with a private speech pathologist and I don’t see the progress from school. Initially when the school, the child study teem social worker and I meet  I asked them if they will help with potty training and they responded that s it was there number  one (1) priority was have him potty trained . Well they have given me 100000 excuses. I potty trained my son and they did not help. This gives me the impression that they are not living up to his expectation and they are not going to teach him things that I know he is capable of learning and doing with a little more discipline and encouragement.  I am looking for a new school in NJ and I spoke with my sons social worker who I have build a relationship with and she said that the pre-k teacher at the public school in my district has an autistic son and that she is going to have my son sit in the classroom for at least one day so she can give us an assessment as far as him functioning in a regular classroom next year. If he is not ready I am going to request that next year he goes to a regular pre-k class for half the day and special pre-k for the other half.  With continue services of OT, PT, and speech therapy.  Thank you and sorry for my rambling Any advice and comments welcome

  • Hi my name is Jessie and I have a 3 year old with severe apraxia of speech and global apraxia.  He also has a sensory disorder and severe expressive language delay.  I am interested in using the vantage plus for him by PRC...but I can't find a testing center in my area and don't know what steps I need to take...his school isn't going to help me..they barley wanted to give him speech therapy for more then one day a week...as it is we only got two days...

we are testing the vantage out on our laptop and gabe can already tell me who his friends are and what the weather is...his favorite toys and if he is hungry...these are things he doesn't do unless prompted to do so...so it is exciting to have him communicate with us that way...

anyway i am very excited about finding this message board...any help would be great!!!

  • What exactly is Apraxia? I ask this because my 10 year old nephew who i have had for six years has only been given the broad diagnosis of MH. That dosent tell you a whole lot. He has severe speach delay, motor delay, and has the expressive capabilities of a two year old. No matter how many doctors we see or how many tests we have done we cant get a specific diagnosis or reason why.

  • Hi.  Have you been to a geneticist and have they studied his DNA for possible translocations in his genes?  My son has no specific diagnoses.  He has a gene that duplicated itself partially, attached itself to another gene and presents itself in different areas.  ie speech, motor control, etc.  Thay took a blood sample and figured this out when he was a baby.  He is almost 5 now.  Btw,  what is MH?  Apraxia has to do with inability to move correctly as in motor function of the central nervous system.  Hope this helps.  :-)

I blame myself for what has happened to my son and with a child on the way I beg for advice on what I should be looking for or doing to stay from getting frustrated at times. He doesnt talk and seem to have screaming session for 1 to 3 hours for no reason. Can anyone relate to me if you can please respond. thank you!
