Looking for a 5 item or less using beef round steak and not stew so perhas not tomatoe based. I'm looking too, thought I saw some yesterday now just have to remember where hahaha.....Julie

Edit: Found the creamy swiss steak and am trying that with a few Julie modifications hoping for great results to serve over rice. I am looking forward to a rice and gravy entree for dinner.

Here is a Pepper Steak Recipe  I do in the oven or the crockpot.  This is a recipe that I use in our home quite frequently.

   Pepper Steak

        1    Lb round steak
        1    Lg. green pepper, sliced
        1    Lg. onion, sliced
    1/4    Cup butter
1    1 oz pkg Brown gravy mix

Crockpot:

Place about  1 cup water in the crock pot,  place the steak, then your pepper and onions, and cook for about 3 hours on low,  add the butter and  gravy mix the last 2 hours of cooking. You may have to thicken with a little cornstarch, depending on how much water you used.  You may need to add more during cooking, crock pots vary.

Oven

Using a tenderizer, pound the meat good on both sides.  Place meat on a sheet of aluminum foil.  (Making sure it is big enough to wrap up the entire piece of meat and seal all of the edges to keep the juice in). Place sliced peppers and onion on top of the steak.  Sprinkle the gravy mix over the steak and vegetables  and bring the sides up, add 1/2 cup of water and seal all the edges.  Bake in the oven.

        TEMP:  350*                TIME:  45 MIN.                SERVES:  4

Another quick thickening trick is "Quick Tapioca".  It is an odorless, tasteless and colorless pure starch. You do not need to mix with liquid first and it doesn't alter the flavor of the meal in any way, a big plus.  1-2 Tablespoons is usually sufficient to thicken any soup or broth.  Thank you for posting your recipe for Pepper Steak.  Dodie, co-admin.

Can "Quick Tapioca" be used in gravies in place of the flour?  I have a terrible time keeping my flour from clumping in my gravy.. makes me so aggitated that all I ever get is lumpy gravy..lol

Quick Tapioca is a pure, odorless, colorless and tasteless starch which can be used in for almost any thickening purpose.  The great advantage is 1- you don't have to mix with water first and 2-It does not change or alter the flavor of the dish, like flour and cornstarch can.  Example: You got a big pot full of stew or a soup that you would like a thicker base liquid.  Just add 1-2 Tablespoons into the pot and stir a little.  It will thicken it up as the heat breaks down the starch.  You kinda have to play with th amount because it varies with people's tastes.  Thank you for the question.  Dodie
