So a bit of back story - my husband was severely over weight and decided to do something about it. For almost 3 years now, he's been very food conscious and has lost over 200 lbs and maintaining. Though he understands the many reasons people can't won't lose weight, he still becomes frustrated when he hears people make up excuses. He blogs and has FB for his weight-loss alter-ego.
Then, on top of all of that, our 11 y/o is T1 diabetic since he was 3.
So last night, we made our annual apple pie. We substitue sugar with splenda so not only can hubby indulge in a piece and not feel guilty, but so can our son without spiking his sugars.
Hubby posted pics of the yummy apple pie on his FB and got the following comment:
"I can tell that you guys aren't diabetic. The TEMPTATION to eat more than one slice at a time would be too much...plus the sugar content would put my numbers into overload. Every 3 months I have an A1C from the hospital...that is soon coming up and I don't want it ruined by eating sweets"
Now - of course this person didn't know our son was T1; nor that the splenda was used. And they were obviously speaking about T2...but the excuse drove my husband a little nutty. Plus, it hits a sore spot to assume we know nothing about diabetes, so here was my husbands response:
"My son is a type 1 diabetic (since age 3) and he will likely eat more than his share ;) most of the carbs in the pie will come from the crust and the apples as I used Splenda in place of sugar and a minimal amount of brown sugar, we... are very diabetic aware in our house with everything that we eat. A1C numbers average out over that period so a slice of pie or two shouldn't effect those numbers, BUT with that said if you can't get past the temptation well then that's a whole different story!"
Personally, it makes me smile. Sorry if I offended anyone...just wanted to share. If anyone is interested in his blog and pics of the apple pie (and FB link is on the blog) he's here:
