Do you let your diabetic drink diet pop?
I let my DD drink only two a week - One each weekend day -but I limit all my kids pop to just that. But lately she has been buying a diet pop at school in the vending machine - She is now in Jr high this year and it is cool to her to have the freedom to buy it! My thought was that it was fine as long as it wasn't too often and that she struggles for freedom over something and that this was something I would let her have - Well the school nurse disagrees with me - "it is not good for her" - just thought I would get more input I am at a toss up on this one! Wondered if there is more to diet pop then I have read about!
We didn't keep soda in the house before my ds was dx'd, and we still don't,but I do let him have it as a treat and when we get soda (for when we have guests) I always get diet too so he can have some. I wouldn't worry about it, your dd has enough going on to make her different from her peers, let her have this to fit in :)
I have let my daughter drink diet coke since she was diagnosed with diabetes 6 yrs ago.. in fact they gave it to her in the hospital when we were there to learn how to take care of her.. She is 13 and in the 8th grade. I don't let her drink it everyday but we do let her have it.. If you don't like the regular diet coke they do sell diet coke with splenda.. My daughter actually likes this one better.
I let my son have diet soda. Already took everything else from him why would I take away soda too? His doctor has no problem at all with him drinking all the diet soda he wants as long as he drinks at least 1 bottle of water a day.
My daughter only likes Diet Root Beer but sometimes has to drink diet other things at restaurants and stuff but I let her. It's better than trying to bolus her for the tons of carbs in regular pop. And I do believe the hospital gave my daughter diet pop too everytime she was in the hospital. In fact, my doctor and all her staff drink it whenever we are at functions with them.
Now that I think about it - they did give it to her in the hospital. Thanks ladies! Do things ever happen to you and you know you have made the right decision but then you think about it and think there might be more to it than you might see! This was one of those things - I never thought it was a big deal but after 6 years of J being diabetic I wonder if I get lax once in a while! Thanks for helping me think it through.
Mine drink soda. Well, right now we are avoiding all artifitial sweetener to see if that's causing his tummy trouble, but before he did.
I let my diabetic child have diet soda all the time when other kids are having soda. It's like anything else--in moderation, it's not a big deal. I think that maybe your school nurse has overstepped her boundaries. I'm sure she means well, but maybe she should let you make the parenting decisions!
