CGM

I was researching the medtronic insulin pump when I saw a device that you can get with it that constantly monitors your glucose. It says there is a little alarm that will sound if you are going to low or to high and will help you see the trends and such that are happening. Does anyone here use a CGM and if so what do you think of it? I do not know if this is even a possibility for my son, for all I know he might be to small for one right now, I just find them interesting and would like to learn more about them.

We have it and I love it. It's so helpful when trying to make dosing adjustments. I find for my son it doesn't usually catch the lows before he does (it'll read 90 something when he's 70 something) but I just set the low alarm higher to compensate. Usually when he goes low, he drops to quickly for the CGM to keep up. When he's drifting down, it's fine. It catches the highs nearly every time. As for your son being to small, I doubt it. I know of a lot of people who use it with toddlers. One note: we cover the whole thing with IV3000 to keep it attached. And it was causing a rash. We put a piece I'd moleskin on the transmitter and it solved to problem.

medtronic is the only one that is pediatric approved. check with your insurance company first before chosing i wanted that for my son since he is hypoglycemic unaware but even then my insurance would not cover it.  you still have to check blood sugars often like you do now it just helps for those inbetween times if it sees a pattern.  many people mistake it for keeping track of your BG and that you dont have to and thats not true at all.  talk with your endo and see what they think.  i think they are great and a valuable tool to help but just as with the pump it doesnt mean you get to do less work its just a tool to help

our insurance won't cover them and they are a bit expensive   - we would like to try them though!

The reason we are waiting for that is because shes so little. From what I have seen the needle is quite large and not as thin as the infusion sets. But that is our personal choice :)
