My middle son is starting to show signs that my older son showed before he was diagnosed. I am trying very hard not to read to much into it but it is hard. Here are the things that are starting to happen.
- Sudden weight gain for no reason
- Waking up in the middle of the night thirsty enough to down an entire can of pop
- Waking up to pee
- Not feeling good more often
- Stomach hurts in the mornings then goes away
Again I am trying not to read to much into this but it is hard esp. since this is the age that my other son was diagnosed. Should I just not worry about it or should I start randomly taking his sugar to see if it is higher then it should be?
It wouldn't hurt to get a fasting blood sugar just to make everyone feel better. I will randomly check my DD, especially if she is looking rundown.
Your other son gained weight before being diagnosed with type 1? That's interesting. Is he drinking regular soda or diet? Does he drink a lot? Regular can explain the weight gain and diet could cause stomach pain. Any chance of a uti? Just throwing things out there.
Yes my oldest son gained a massive amount of weight before being diagnosed - he was an 11 year old that weighed nearly 150 lbs!
As for my middle son he does drink reg. pop and the amount he drinks has gone up a lot - he is thirsty a lot more all of a sudden. I am trying to push water down him as well. Before my oldest was diagnosed he would also wake up in the morning with stomach aches then later in the day it would be all better. Of course since it got all better I thought he was faking to get out of school. Well now when my middle son has the stomach ache it is in the morning as well.
The quickest way to ease your worry is to check his bg in the morning.
Am about to. I use to do monthly tests on us all but haven't for a few months. So I told my daughter I was doing the tests again. So far so good - I woke up at 83 and she woke up at 80. Going to wake up Caleb now and test him. Ok woke him up and he tested at 86. Maybe it is all in my head.
I'm so glad it's a good number!
If I were you I would really start monitoring the amount of soda. That can cause the weight gain and I know when I drink soda I need to use the bathroom more. It also can make you feel thristy and feel like crap. Drinking soda in the middle of the night will cause dental problems down the road to unless he is taking the time to brush after he drinks.

He has always been a big soda drinker and never gotten up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom nor has he ever gotten up in the middle of the night to get a drink. I suppose people change though. My gut tells me something is wrong though! Maybe it is just because I am so scared of one of my other kids having it.
