How God Selects the Mother of a Diabetic Child
by Erma Bombeck
Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures and a couple by habit. Did you ever wonder how mothers of children with diabetes are chosen? Somehow I visualize God hovering over earth selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As He observes, He instructs His angels to make notes in a giant ledger.
"Armstrong, Beth, son. Patron Saint Matthew."
"Forrest, Marjorie, daughter, Patron Saint Cecilia."
"Rutledge, Carrie, twins. Patron Saint Gerard. She's used to profanity."
Finally, He passes a name to an angel and smiles, "Give her a child with diabetes." The angel is curious. "Why this one, God? She's so happy."
"Exactly", smiles God. "Could I give child with diabetes to a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel."
"But has she the patience?" asks the angel.
"I don't want her to have too much patience, or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wear off, she'll handle it. I watched her today. She has that feeling of self and independence that is so rare and so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I am going to give her has her own world. She has to make the child live in her world and that's not going to be easy."
"But, Lord, I don't think she even believes in you."
God smiles. "No matter. I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness."
The angel gasps. "Selfishness? Is that a virtue?"
God nods. "If she cannot separate herself from the child occasionally, she will never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with less than perfect."
"She does not realize it yet, but she is to be envied. I will permit her to see clearly the things I see .... ignorance, cruelty, prejudice ... and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing my work as surely as if she is here by my side."
"And what about her patron saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in mid air. God smiles. "A mirror will suffice."

I love this! The first time I read it I called my mom at midnight and made her turn on her computer and read it ( I posted it on my myspace profile)...It it truely a moving thing to read and I am sooo glad you shared it here! :o)

You know, it's funny - I realize that I truly have never asked God,
"Why me?" I have often asked, "Why Emily?" I have
seen how she is frustrated and embarassed about being different,
especially when she has had a low in front of one of her friends or
when she has to have that infusion site showing on her leg in shorts or
a bathing suit. She has been a very difficult child at times, and
I have said, "Diabetes couldn't have happened to a better kid!" I
have said this sarcastically because she was already difficult and then
God added diabetes to the mix! I believe now that her diabetes is
the only thing saving her from becoming anorexic. Today, I thank
God for her diabetes. She knows that she must eat because of
it. I appreciate the piece about how God chose the moms. I
am strong, and I can handle it (not like it, but deal with it) only
because God made me that way and I can rely on Him always.
I love this>> it hits home like you would not believe...It makes my heart ache and flutter at same time. To know god has blessed me with my daughter. Yes she is diabetic. He has blessed me with a strong child. ONly god knows how I can crumble sometimes. Knowing that he has given me the gift of this precious child. She just so happens to be diabetic. That makes we want to make sure to be even stronger for her. So that she can see that being diabetic should not make you weak. It should make you strong. Love this. I am surely going to pass this one along.
