So School is starting up again everywhere, I think it would be a good idea to make a list of supplies that need to be sent with your child for his or her return to the old classroom.

Hopefully with everyones help we will all have the best lists possible this year, and everyone will have their child returning to school completely prepared. :D

  • So, what do you send?  Our list is:

    1. meter
    2. test strips
    3. alcohol swabs
    4. insulin pen and needles
    5. snacks, usually individually wrapped, some 15 g. carbs, and some protein-only like meat sticks, which Joshua loves
    6. glucose tabs
    7. glucogon
    8. extra lancets

I normally send enough of the disposable things to get through a whole semester, so I don't have to be worrying about it all year long.  Our school nurse is great though, so I seldom really have to worry while Josh is at school.  What does everyone else do?

  • This is a great topic since I'm extremely new to this (my son was diagnosed with Type 1 just 4 days ago).

Question about the meat sticks - which ones are you referring to? I'd like to give my son some protein as well and not just make his snacks fruit only.

I hope we get more posts on this topic.

  • Glad to see you here. These ladies are so nice and full of good information. The first few months are going to seem the longest. They did for me. I still feel like it is an on going battle and my oldest has been diagnosted for a year now.

  • Scout-Mom, I have a question for you.  Joey is hopefully going to be starting the pump in a few weeks. I am not sure what I should do for his back to school pack for the nurse. Can you help. Thanks so much.

  • Joshua just likes the Slim Jim's, or whatever indivually wrapped kind they carry at Aldi.  He's not really picky.  I like to send some protein only and some carbs, (and the nurse always has fast sugars).  Last year's teacher was quite familiar with diabetics, and really encouraged Josh to snack wisely, so he would have a 15 g. carb snack for normal days, protein only when he was a bit high, but still hungry after recess or PE.

Sorry to hear you had to join us, I think we agree we'd rather not need to be here, but isn't it great to get some support!

  • That's a great idea... I hadn't thought of that. Daniel's sugar has been a little high these past couple of days. I've only allowed him to have the sugar-free jello and popsicles at snack time. He's never tried the meat sticks but I'm gonna get some for him and see if he likes them.

  • I noticed that no one included a sharp's container in their lists.  I would also include ketone strips, a case of water,a pack of juice packs (15c for the classroom and the nurse) and as far as protein snacks, what about cheese sticks that the nurse can keep in her refrigerator; a little healthier than packaged meat maybe.  For those on a pump, you need extra insulin, site changes, and batteries for meters and pumps too. For those on a pump, you also will need syringes, just in case. Another thing to conisder if you're on a pump is a copy of the pump manuel for the nurse.  We're all in that same "back to school" mode and there is so much to remember. Another suggestion someone shared with me is a powdered container of Kool-Aid that just needs to be added to water. Good to keep at home too. This way, there is always a fast acting carb available! I'm sending one just in case. Good luck to everyone this year and maybe next year we won't have to worry about this stuff because a cure will be found!!!

  • Sorry, our school nurse already has the sharps container, so that one is not on my radar.  Sorry too for the underline.  For some reason my computer doesn't want to let me turn it off.  LOL

So we have been working hard to put together our bak to school list I'm going to list what I sent here in two lists blue for normal supplies and green for pump specific supplies.

    1. Glucose Meter
    2. Test Strips
    3. Test Strip Solution
    4. Multiclix Lancet Device
    5. Lancet Rounds
    6. Keto Strips
    7. Alcohole Wipes
    8. Syringes
    9. Unopened Insulin
    10. Glucogon
    11. Starbursts
    12. Juice
    13. Water Bottles
    14. Snacks
    15. Caps for inset
    16. Inset & tubing
    17. Insulin Carteridge
    18. IV 3000
    19. Numbing Cream
    20. IV Prepad
    21. AA lithium battery

While I prefer to go to the school to do the site change myself, in case of an emergency I want them to have everything there and ready so that either another family member or a trained staff member can change his site or give him a shot.

I'm pretty sure that's everything that we sent, if anyone can think of something not on my list please let me know. I love to learn new things.

While our nurse supplies the sharps containers I completely agree with everything else, I love the koolaid idea! And Ifor one hope this is our last year as well. :D
