What music do your kids listen to?

So, I'm very open minded when it comes to what music my kids can listen to.. they are allowed to listen to everything I do. Keep in mind though most of the stuff I listen to is extremely tame by today's standards (Beatles, Pink Floyd, Metallica,  Aerosmith, Janis Joplin  Hendrix,The Kinks, The Doors..). I don't listen to much stuff that's out now.  Music is extremely important to me. In fact, I used to play in a band.. we weren't great, but once upon a time we toured quite a bit and actually had an album. Needless to say that my children are schooled in the classics. My daughter Alice loves pink floyd.. I used to play comfortably numb for her when she went to bed. Anyway, in my pre-school this last Friday I had a collection of songs for the kids. One of which was The Time Warp (From Rocky Horror Picture Show).. Princess Sophie (who is almost 6) heard it and has been singing it ever since. As we were cleaning up dinner tonight, I said "You know there is a dance that goes to that song." And as I was teaching it to her, (which by the way was one of the proudest moments of my life *sniffle and little tear*) my mother-in-law came over. She saw what we were doing and started lecturing me saying that it was inappropriate for Sophie. The TimeWarp? Really? It's not like we were singing Sweet Transvestite or watching the movie. This is an old argument between the two of us.. ever since she saw my 2 year old wearing the AC/DC shirt I bought her. So I'm curious. What do other parents let their kids listen to? Am I being too liberal? Is it wrong of me to want my kids to grow up knowing good music?

My kids listen to everything in nearly every genre of music.  They like the music their father and I grew up listening to, classical, some opera (in the right setting) country, religious, rap, rock, reggie, acoustic, heavy metal, cartoon music, they even listen to some death something or other.

I'm OK with whatever they listen to but they know that I will not tolerate anything that is insulting to women (bitch this and ho that crap) but other than that it's all good.  Usually if they listen to something they know I will get upset about they use headphone, this includes their father.

My kid listens to extreme heavy metal. Currently she's attempting to learn the words to Nightwish - Sleeping Sun. She also will imitate Alexi Laiho's headbanging (lol we call it the "Allu headbang") and loves anything with Tony Kakko  too. As long as there is no swearing in the music and it's not too creepy I let her listen to it / watch the videos.

Its your kid, you can do what you like. My mom ranted about the same at me when I was telling her about my kid listening to Sonata Arctica and Nightwish. (My kid is 2 1/2 years old, btw.)  Also, my kid doesn't listen to alot of kids music (it grates on my ears) either.

You're the parent, you choose what your kid hears. And tell your mother that. :)

They are your children, your mother-in-law needs to respect that. What you and/or your husband choose does not concern he. You are doing great, children need to be allowed to explore and you encourge that. That IS a good thing. I am a mom as well as a grand-ma so I can see from both sides.

you're not doing anything wrong. We listen to the exact same music and our son (he's only 4months now) will most likely be raised the same way as your kids when it comes to music. (where did you get the AC/DC shirt?? I must have it lol)

who cares about your mil, or anybody elses opinion in that any ways. she had her chance raising her kids. these are your kids, you raise them how you feel is right. power to ya ;)

We listen to a lot of rock, metal and classical. Its funny whenever he hears metal, he starts headbanging, don't know where he learned it from.
