Visiting Portland - rent a car or use public transportation?

I'm visiting Portland for the first time and would love to really experience the city and use the public transportation. I have a 7 month old though. Is Portland baby and public trans friendly? I will be flying in, staying overnight around 76th st and visiting all over, specifically Pearl (am also open to suggestions).

Can anyone fill me in? Should I just rent a car/Carseat, etc. or is Portland easily commutable and baby friendly? I tried googling but all that comes up is some bus driver kicking a nursing mom off the bus. I saw lots of maps and stuff and I'm not at all intimidated to learn the routes, but not sure if that's the wisest option with a baby.

Open to ideas, opinions, suggestions!! I know I'll love it. I just want to make the best of it!

You can get around pretty easily. I used to only use public transit. Check out the actual trimet website. There is a trip planner. It comes in handy to connect the dots.

Thank you! So you wouldn't recommend I rent a car?
