Have any of you ladies seen this before? I am so envious of her food storage I have a long way to go before I get there!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0nT0HRbf-c

I've seen a shorter version of this. I always love seeing her shelves!! It makes me drool!  I think some of her information is off. She doesn't store the wheat very well and it is not a complete food that you could live off that alone??

I always wonder at the junk pre-processed food some people store. Do you store that many taco shells? To me that's not nutritious and is a rare treat. I also figure I could make my own so it's a waste of money especially to store.  I'm also not sure that we would ever use 22 bottles of ketchup in 5 years let alone 1! Always interesting to see what's on people's shelves!

Holy cow yes! I've not seen it before, but yeah, I was drooling over it!

I do agree with the PP about some of her food storage not being all that practical, but hey, if you find things on a really good deal and it's something you know you will use, why not! I know we have some things that we would buy that others would think are ridiculous, but for us they would be really nice to have. For example, I could have over 300 cans of mandarin oranges and still probably run out before a year was up! On the other hand, there are lots of things that I couldn't picture buying(like canned spaghetti sauce. I make my own and now my family won't use anything else! At least it's almost all canned tomato type stuff and dry seasonings/spices.) that most people might consider important.

I can't wait until we get moved in a few weeks though! I'm so excited about food storage lately, but I don't have any space and I really don't want to have to move it so soon. It's going to be hard enough to move what little I have! I SOOO wish I could have a room that was set up so well though! We'll have some space just for food storage, but mostly we are going to have to get creative. I think my sons' room's closet will probably be devoted to it, but I don't know what else yet.

I have always wondered about those barrels. I'm wondering if she got a lot of those things for free or cheap and that's why you see so many processed foods.  Also, I wonder if she is storing for more than one family or has a really large family. I'm still trying to figure out how much I want of different items. Now that I'm working on my baking skills, I'm going through a lot more flour, oil and sugar. I don't think I would go through 22 bottles of ketchup for a long time though. We just use it for the occasional hot dog or fries. Maybe once or twice a month.

I think her food storage probably works for her family.  For us, we LOVE tacos!  We eat them about once a week, so I do have a lot of taco shells in storage.  I know how to make tortillas and such should I need to do it, but it's easier for rotation purposes to keep the taco shells on hand.  I also keep lots of patas, sauce, canned goods, peanut butter, and well...everything we normally use on hand.  And honestly, I think my family COULD go through almost that much ketchup in a year.  We are some ketchup eatin people!  Of course I know that's can't comprise most of my storage, but honestly, if we were living off wheat-meat because things got down to that...I'd be loving that ketchup!

I think each family stores what they need.  For me, storage is not just something I keep around waiting for something to happen.  I use it every day.  I have 12 40oz jars of peanut butter that are good until 6/2011.  We love peanut butter, and if I can get it on sale, then I stock up and use it, re-stock on the next sale, and call it good.  We've only gone through 1 jar in the last month and a half, but hey...I've got 19 more months to use 12 more jars, and it's something my kids eat.

I'm sure some people would think my storage was weird.  We of course have long-term stuff (wheat, rice, oats, dry milk, etc) that IS good for 30+ years because it's stored properly, but I just double or tripple what I buy normally and that's my food storage too.  I wouldn't want to envision a life without breakfast cereal, taco shells, spices, mac & cheese, ragu pasta sauce, ranch dressing, and spaghetti-o's.  That's stuff my kids will eat gladly - regardless of when, where, or how often, which is why I make sure to always have some on hand.  I've gotten A LOT of comments about the 30 boxes of breakfast cereal ontop of my cabinets.  Little do people know that we have a huge rubbermaid box full of treats and goodies (including the best kinds of cereal) in the bottom of our closet.  lol.  Not always the healthiest stuff, but stuff to give the kids so that they aren't aware of us HAVING to use food storage in the event of an emergency.

I'm just wondering how she rotates through all of that food. Canned vegetables are expensive compared to frozen or a lot of times even fresh unless she got them for really cheap. If those 50 gallon barrels are full of flour and sugar, how much baking is she doing? There are almost 20 cups in a 5 lb. bag of flour and that would be around 6-7 loaves of bread so she has enough flour to probably make a loaf of bread a day and that isn't including her wheat collection. Her family must be big.

ETA: I've been trying to figure out how to say what I was thinking with out putting my foot in my mouth too much. It just looks like the video shows a lot of short term food storage and just wonder about having all that food if it expires with in a year or two. I know I got caught up in sales a year ago and now I'm having to give away some food.

It is really funny huh..  mandarine oranges.. I could have two cans in storage and they'd still be there at the end of a year of eating everything else. =)  But.. if I get a coupon for something free like that, I'd certainly store it and trade it for something I want in hard times..lol

I've watched her videos before and I agree on the wheat storage issue.  I don't think it would last that long the way she is storing it.  #10 cans are a much better way or even buckets.  Anyway, I would love to have that much stuff!! Maybe one day, but I find it hard to do because we too use our food storage everyday, so in order to stock up enough I'd have to spend $200/week to get a years supply of everything.  Right now I'm just doing the 3 month supply of everyday things and then the rest in long term storage.  But yeah, we would go through at least 15 bottles of ketchup in a year.  AT LEAST!!  My son eats it on everything!

She has a blog and talks about her food storage. She is a bargain shopper and got the ketchup for 17 cents a piece I think. It was on a news clip that was on her website.

OP: It is an amazing video and if anything bad ever happens, her family definately will be eating well for a long time.

I agree with you-- envy for the space she has (I think it's about the size of my house! And we don't have basements around here...), and "horror" that she has so much unhealthy, processed foods. I seriously doubt families need 22 bottles of ketchup in a year... We still are working on the two opened ones we bought over 2 years ago (and, no matter what anybody else in this house says, they're being tossed next frige cleanout...).
