Back in 2008 I went a little crazy with buying canned foods. I now have a storage room filled with canned items that say they are expired. Many of them expired back in 2010. I thought canned foods lasted forever??????
So does anyone know if they are still fine or do I have to throw them away?

I'm of the thought that if it looks good, smells good, and tastes good, it is good. I have, without incident, fed expired food to my huband!
Well if it's safe for your husband...........LOL

He has a much more sensitive stomach than me, so if someone gets sick first, it'd be him :)
I've heard that the nutrition will start to go away the longer it sits there. (Not sure if this is true). If it's cakes or similar, it may be a bit flatter than usual. (I have experienced this myself).
I've also heard urband myths that the "use by" date was placed there by manufacturers to encourage consumers to eat their products quickly and buy more. (Rather than stock up on sales and eat it forever).
I'm curious to know what others do with their expired goods, too...
This is exactly why we need to store what we eat and eat what we store!
I would probably still eat the things in the cans, but being that they are two years past expiration, I would be a bit leary. I've eaten things a year old, but rarely older then that. Make sure that if you buy more canned foods, you rotate everything out!
I have done my research and what I found is conflicted. Such as it is safe up to one year after the expiration date or some sites say 2 years. I have also read that it is fine as long as the can is not extended and squirts at you when opened.
I have also read that the date deals with freshness rather than dangerous. Meaning that the canned food is suppose to last a very long time but can become stale tasting after a certain time.
I have read that you should look for dents and rust, to smell the product is also suggested.
Lots of information out there mostly I get that if your comfortable using it then use it barring rust, dents and an inflated can that bubbles when opened (duh). Not sure if I personally am comfortable using these canned items 4 years after they where purchased but I am even more disturbed about just tossing them out.
Was hoping to hear more of what you all thought on this matter.
I'd eat any of them that didn't contain tomato products. They are notorious for carrying bacteria without you being able to tell. Veggies and fruits might have lost some color, flavor, or nutrition, but they aren't going to typically be bad. Make sure that there is no rust on the can, aren't any dents, and that the product doesn't contain tomatoes in it.
Also, products WITH salt will last longer than those without.

No tomato products, I will throw those out today THANKS!

There just maybe something to that urban legend.
