Doomsday Preppers

There is a new show on the National Geographic channel. I think it's on Tuesday night. I was able to download two shows that I just started watching. They show different families preparations and I guess an expert will grade them on how well they're doing. The first family I've seen before who have the pool aquaponic system with the chickens and the goats. We delayed setting up our small aquaponic system where we didn't know if we were going to be out of country for  a year but since it looks like it will be only three months, we're going to start setting up the system next week. Very excited about being able to have fresh produce all year round. Plus if we get the fish going, we have 3 protein sources we're providing ourselves. Probably 4 after next year when we get some ducks. :)

I watched some of the older episodes of Doomsday Preppers on YouTube... Super fun! I couldn't believe how many tilapia the family with the aquaponics had... THOUSANDS! (And they said that they ate fish every day).

Quoting GoodyBrook:

I watched some of the older episodes of Doomsday Preppers on YouTube... Super fun! I couldn't believe how many tilapia the family with the aquaponics had... THOUSANDS! (And they said that they ate fish every day).

I couldn't imagine eating fish everyday and I have a huge problem with their chickens pooping in their water supply. They would have to worry about more illnesses like salmonella. It grossed me out how they ate duckweed straight out of their water supply. I do want to try feeding our chickens duckweed though because it's easy to grow and a great source of protein. I love watching these shows and getting new ideas. Ultimately, I would like to provide 80% of our chickens food and only buy 20% or less of it.

We want to eventually being eating fish once, maybe twice a week. Probably tilapia one day and perch another. DH wants to try experimenting with raising prawns too. The nice thing about raising your own fish is you don't have to worry about them being high in mercury. This was the first year we sent some of our chickens to freezer camp and our kids handled it pretty well. If you ask my DD about them, she'll tell you they were yummy.

I just can't handle these food prices anymore though. Yesterday, we spent over $100 at the grocery store and we didn't even buy any meat. That's ridiculous. It was all basics like milk, fruits and vegtables except for a box of cereal and a package of cookies my DH really wanted.

We couldn't eat fish daily either. When we do eat it, tilapia & salmon are our preferred ones.

I wondered about the chickens pooping in the water too.

I'd love to hear details about your system when you get it set up.

I saw that show once when we had a preview of the channel on dish network.  We don't have the channel any longer, so I won't be able to watch it.  Some of the thigns those people do are pretty extreme!

I watched it.  I thought it was very interesting how different people go about preparing.  I suppose my favorite folks were the lady with the TONS of shelf-stable food who offered self-defense classes in Provo, Utah.  Great sense of humor!  Also the couple along the Madrid Fault Line seemed so kind...I'd want them for neighbors in a crisis, for sure!
