My son hasnt been diagnosed, but they did the sweat test twice and he didnt sweat enough so they are going to reschedule the test. He has what they think is celiacs disease, but they think that his digestive pain is too extreme to just be celiacs and think he may have CF as well.
His symptoms are that from 2 weeks after he was born he screamed about 6-8 hours a day until 13 months old when we took him off the gluten. He is 15 months old now and about once sometimes twice a week he has what seems to be a gluten attack (we dont know where it would be coming from though) where he will scream for hours again.
Also, he had black poop always, which has slowed since cutting the gluten, but he still has it. His poop used to float when it was black, but not anymore.
He has gained 2 lbs in the last 2 months, and is still in the "less than 3 percentile catagory"-he is 18 lbs 6 ozs at 15 months. He is in the 5 percentile in height now-in the last month he grew for the first time in 8 months.
He has no respiratory problems(that we know of) and he has basically never been sick. Does any of this sound familiar if your babies only has stomach problems. Has a gluten free diet helped any of your kids symptoms? Thanks!
My son has really only had digestive problems with his Cf and its hard to say if it is the same. He was diagnosed when he was 9 months old, because he was throwing up and could not pass a BM. He ended up having to have bowel surgery, this was because his body was not releasing the proper amount of enzymes that he needed to digest his food. Since then (he is 3 now) he has been taking enzymes to help him break down his food.
I have been told that if he were to eat without taking his enzymes, especially something really fatty he will get a really bad stomache ache and most likely have diarreah.
CF children are known to have greasy, bulky and very smelly stools.
The only other clue we had was when he was 3 months old he would scream for about an hour before he would have a bowel movement. We ended up switching him to Nutramigen enfamil formula and that helped immediately because the formula particially digests itself. He has always had issues with been under weight.
Maybe you should ask your doctors if they think he would benefit from trying enzymes. I dont think they have any side effects!!
I hope this will help. Let me know it you have any other questions.
