DD is 11 months old, we will have a follow-up swallow study in a couple months. The first study showed we had to thicken her liquids. She was 6months at the time, maybe 7months. She was still just eating stage 1 baby food, and couldn't eat homemade baby food. Now like I said she's 11 months. I hear about ALL these other babies who are eating off of mom and dad's plate, whatever they are eating. Like mashing up cooked veggies or eating toast or waffles, even things like chicken cut up real small. We can't even master the smashed up cooked veggies. I give it to her and she does fine at first, but then she gags (I stop feeding her), and she throws up. So I have to contine with our stage 2 baby food. I was hoping the swallowing would actually get better, not worse, but it looks like something is wrong.
My SIL has a friend with a son with CF. She said his only problem is his swallowing. Has anybody dealt with the problems I'm dealing with? Also she is 11 months old and I'm supposed to be winging her off of formula this month with the hope that she wont be on it at all next month. That's fine because she likes regular milk. However I'm concerned because without a miracle she will not be getting formula OR very much solid food. That idea isn't setting well with me. Even her baby food, she doesn't like to eat very much. I aim for 3 times a day with baby food, but she really doesn't eat even a whole jar. I can't force feed her. BTW, my neice is 6 months old and eats more than DD.
Does this all sound CF related?
I'm sorry not really at least not to me. Is your child gaining weight? My son's first word at 4 months old was hungry. He ate everything he could get hold of very early on but it was all running straight through him.
The only thing I can see that CF experiance could help you with is a stomach feeding tube. Alot of Cf kids get them to help them gain weight, but not because of a swollowing issue.
I hope you find some help soon, God Bless
I'm going through the EXACT same thing with my 17 month old son, Brady! He is on whole milk fortified with carnation instant breakfast to increase the calories, and other than drinking about 20 oz. of milk per day, all he eats is yogurt and applesauce! He won't eat ANYTHING that has any texture to it! He's always been that way, but he would eat the homemade baby food I made and he also ate stage 2 baby food as well, but never anything more texturized than that! He's currently in physical therapy (has been since he was 4 months old) as he's delayed in his development and they are able to begin him with speech therapy with hopes that will also help his eating...occupational therapy also helps with feeding issues too! Brady also gags quite a bit when he eats, and he used to throw up right after eating. His GI doctor did several tests and found out that he has a significant delay in digestion and we're waiting to put him on meds for that as he hasn't thrown up in several weeks now, which is good! He's on nexium for his reflux and that seems to work pretty well too!
