Every kid loves getting new school supplies, we know we did.

Even if the ones from last year are still ok, there's nothing like getting some new ones.

In the thread below share your tips for buying new school supplies without breaking the bank.

10 moms who reply to this thread will win a $10 Barnes & Noble gift card.

  • I buy a ton of school supplies every year, even though my son doesnt need them(with the exception of this year). I usually donate them to local shelters to pass out to needy kids and to my church who uses them for the kids in Religious Education. I got a ton of stuff from Walgreens this year...a 5 pack of mechanical pencils for 5 cents, a pack of highlighters for 39 cents...and so on. Wal-mart and K-amrt have great deals this time of year as well. JUst check the weekly ads every so often to see what you can find.  Hope this helps

  • just have wait for the sales to start when they do have them buy more then you need since you need some thing at home too. i bought a box of 70 notebooks and only spent $1.00. you just have to be willing  to wait for the sales lol.

  • Wal-Mart back to school sales.  Crayola crayons 24 count and Elmer's glue are both just 22 cents.  Their other school supplies are on sale, too.  All in all for my Kindergartener we spent right about $50.00 on school supplies, while that is a lot it could have been a lot more.

  • Check your local sales flyers online! For example at our Fred Meyer right now you can get 10-1 subject spiral notebooks for $1. I check the flyers for the stores that have the best sales for what I need, and whichever store has the most of what I need on sale I go there, coupons in hand, to get what I want. This way I'm not driving all over town (wasting gas!) and playing musical carseats with the kids! It's a one store trip.

  • We're still in preschool so we don't have a list of stuff to buy but I've been getting the deals that staples has been having just to have the stuff around!

  • This year at my son's school, you only have to give a $25 donation for supplies. Way cheaper than buying all of the supplies, and easy than having to shop for them!

  • Stock up as much as you can when crayons and art supplies are on sale, use the micheal's coupns for school project items such as tri-fold boards, and keep a few sets of those $1 cotton gloves around for cold days; it doesn't matter if they get lost; use the oddballs for crazy glove days and save the expensive gloves for snow play and family events.

Also, having the kids hold their own yard sale/toy sale/ lemonade stand isn't a bad idea for labor day weekend; they can use their "wages" to budget and purchase clearance items that they would like, and it teaches them a little back to school planning on their own!
