Helping with homework is a necessary (if sometimes not fun) part of being a mom.  Here are some tips to make yours, and your child's, homework life easier.

1. Turn off the TV.  Make it a house rule that the TV is not allowed to be on while homework is being done.  Music is ok (no videos) - some kids really do excel at schoolwork with music in the background.

2. Have specific study and homework areas.  Whether it's their bedroom, the kitchen, or dining room, make the space as distraction-free as possible.

3. Assignment Notebook.  Encourage using a section of a notebook, or a special one, to write down assignments so there is no confusion over due dates.

4. Set a schedule including a begin time and end time.  Most kids need some time to unwind before they start doing homework, but if they do it too close to bedtime they may be too tired to foucs.

5. What Do I Need Help With.  Encourage splitting assignments into two categories - "What can I do myself" and "What do I need help with".  Only help with the homework your child can't do alone.

  • Try to find what environment works for your child to make doing homework easier.  My daughter focuses on her assignments better if she has music playing in the background, or is wearing her ipod.  Some children need silence, some need music, some want company, some want a desk, some want to lounge on their bed.  Work with your child to find the study habit that works for them instead of enforcing a method YOU think should work.

  • Most schools in our area make the kids have agendas for keeping track of their assignments and they have to have them written down before they go home so there is no excuse for not having an assignment done.  But if your school doesn't have the agendas a notebook works fine too. Some stores sell the agendas for a reasonable price.

  • I do number#1 and no.#3.  Well... #3 is the agenda at school.  This definitely helps with homework.

  • Great ideas, but I have a few more that work for my kids!

    1.  Slience seems to drive everyone nuts in our house so at homework time we turn on some melow music something for background noice but nothing to really distract them from there homework.

    2. I always have a snack that they can munch on nothing to messy.

Good Luck with the new school year moms
