Helping with homework is a necessary (if sometimes not fun) part of being a mom. Here are some tips to make yours, and your child's, homework life easier.
1. Turn off the TV. Make it a house rule that the TV is not allowed to be on while homework is being done. Music is ok (no videos) - some kids really do excel at schoolwork with music in the background.
2. Have specific study and homework areas. Whether it's their bedroom, the kitchen, or dining room, make the space as distraction-free as possible.
3. Assignment Notebook. Encourage using a section of a notebook, or a special one, to write down assignments so there is no confusion over due dates.
4. Set a schedule including a begin time and end time. Most kids need some time to unwind before they start doing homework, but if they do it too close to bedtime they may be too tired to foucs.
5. What Do I Need Help With. Encourage splitting assignments into two categories - "What can I do myself" and "What do I need help with". Only help with the homework your child can't do alone.

#5 sounds good. My oldest does his homework as soon as he gets home with a snack and NO TV.
Get tips! My oldest does all of his alone but my second born always needs help. It is hard for him to focus most of the time.

thanks for the tips this year will be the 1 he starts bringing more homework home to do.

all great suggestions. my little one will be starting kindergarten and am sure he will get homework. it will be new to him and the no tv rule is great. my teenager who is a senior this year is the problem one. she will have the tv and the computer one instant messenging everyone while doing h.w. and talk about unorganized with the assignments. it got to the point where i had two teachers emailing me assignments cuz they knew she would forget to do it or wait to the last minute. last year was a disaster. so i am definitely gonna try to follow these rules for both children.
I'm hoping my daughter brings homework home this year last year there was only reading for 15 minutes a day.I know she will have to practice her violin everyday.
Because my son is Aspergers, trouble focusing for too long. I set the timer he works for 15 min. then he can earn a 10 min break. ( good behavior) We have also taken breaktime min. away too. It helps him.
When he goes back to his homework he is more focused.
1st wekk went great!!
I have found that quiet background music (nothing that they can sing) works well at making a good study enviroment.

I make sure my boys do their homework right after school so they don't forget anything. Music needs to be on. They are old enough to know how to do their own work, unless it is something for research then I like to help out and learn right along with them. I like to get emails from their teachers too (just in case they forgot something!)
have an extra supply box at home with pens, pencils crayons and so forth so if they forget you have some handy to help out.
Check over the homework after it is complete- sometime they leave something out
