These are a few of our Back to School DO'S and Don'ts.
Do - Sneak fun notes like "Have a good day" into lunch boxes as an extra surprise.
Don't - Take a chance with meltdowns over misplaced belongings -- label everything from clothing and shoes to school supplies.
Do - Get organized by visiting the school and meeting the teachers.
Don't - OD on glittery, sparkly school supplies

DO manke sure you get enough sleep
Do make lunches the night before
Don't eat a lot of sugar stuff for breakfast
Do make sure they have everything in their back packs they won't remember
Especially for preschoolers and young ones, don't build up the "after school we'll do this" type promises.
I made that mistake last year, telling my son after school we would go to lunch at Target, etc. He loves that place - for pizza and of course to browse toys.
So halfway through the school day he started crying and acting up and I got a call to pick him up because the teacher was worried and said he was acting out of sorts.
When I asked him what was wrong he said, oh, I just wanted to go to Target! Grrrr! Lesson learned. Now when he asks what we have planned for the day, I don't give him any exciting ideas. I spring it on him later once school is finished or I ask him when I pick him up what he would like to do.
As for a DO - volunteer to help at your child's class; teachers need all the help they can get, whether it be with donating an item or supplies, volunteering your time for a project, assisting some way in class, etc.
DO ALWAYS GIVE YOUR CHILD A HUG BEFORE THEY GET OUT THE DOOR
DO READ TO YOUR CHILD EVERY NIGHT
DON'T KISS YOUR KIDS ON THE CHEEK INFRONT OF THEIRE FRIENDS
DONT PUT YOUR KIDS NAME ON THEIRE BACK PACKS
DON'T FORGET TO CHECK THEIRE AGENDAS EVERY MORNING
Make sure all the papers they send home on the first day are signed and returned right away.
Make sure the school knows of any medications your child may take, and may need to take at school.
Make sure to label all medications correctly in the right container. We don't want none of children to get in trouble for having medications at school.
Even aspirin has to be in the correct container and the school notified if you child has it with them.
Be sure that the bus driver knows your information also. Heaven forbid, in case of accident, they really need to know this information. Yes, the transportation office has it, but our bus drivers here like to have their own information sheet. That way they immediately know who is and isn't riding the bus at the time.
Make sure you tell your children to behave on the bus. I know, they know, they are suppose to, but I have seen children jumping, screaming and hanging out the windows. The bus driver needs as little distraction as possible. Our bus driver has had to stop many times, in a safe place, to settle down students who wouldn't listen until he had pulled over. He will not go until the entire bus has quietened down.
Remember bus drivers transport our children to school and want to do so safely. Riding the bus is a privelege not a right.
Don't yell at your children while they are doing homework. Most kids don't want to do homework anyways. Yelling at them only makes the problem worse. Yes, I have been guilty, lol.
Remember to tell your children I Love You every morning and every night, as they go out the door, and go to sleep.

Do - make sure your child has breakfast, even if it's toast and juice on the run.
Do - challenge elementary teacher's homework assignments if you feel it's too much. In 2nd grade my daughter had a teacher who had always been a high school teacher until that year and was assigning 4 - 5 hours of homework per night. Some of us parents challenged her and together we all consulted other educators to determine an appropriate amount. In other words, teachers aren't always right - be prepared to stick up for your kids!
Don't - expect perfect grades.
Do - expect effort.
Do - help your child become invested in the school through school events (carnivals, sports, book fairs, etc).
Do pack lunch the night before.
Do give your child his/her own alarm clock, but don't let them oversleep!
Do - Be positive about school when talking to your kids (even if you are upset about something).
Don't - Send toys to school (even in backpacks).
Do - Let the teacher know you appreciate her/him with a happy the first week of school (if you can). Example - a $5.00 gift card to an ice cream or yogurt shop. This goes over well with the principal, too.
Don't - Let your kids see you cry on the first day of school.
