These are a few of our Back to School DO'S and Don'ts.

Do - Sneak fun notes like "Have a good day" into lunch boxes as an extra surprise.

Don't - Take a chance with meltdowns over misplaced belongings -- label everything from  clothing and shoes to school supplies.

Do - Get organized by visiting the school and meeting the teachers.

Don't - OD on glittery, sparkly school supplies

  • Don't - turn on the TV untill after everyone is ready for school, have ate breakfast, and brushed their teeth.

Do - make and freeze items your child can throw in the microwave for a quick, hot breakfast. scrambled eggs would be good, You can also pre-cook bacon and divide it into individual portions. Make french toast and let it cool, cut each pice into 3 slices and place 3-6 strips in baggies and toss in freezer. Viola! french toast sticks with out the cost of buying in the store.

  • Do teach your kids the importance of not cheating.

Don't tell them 98% is bad because you were expecting 100%

    Do help them with homework

Do hear them every time they have a question.

  • Not only am I a mom of a fourth grader, I also work at our local school where Kindergartners on up to eigth graders attend. Other than preparations such as laying out clothes the night before, getting enough sleep, etc., I have some suggestions for all parents that will make both the student and the school happy.

    1) Read the student-parent handout and become familiar with the school's rules. I've seen many preteens sent home because their attire did not conform to the school dress code as a result of not being aware of school rules.

    2) Don't allow your child to wear flip-flops. These are not safe when kids are running around the playground. In addition to the lack of support for the feet, your child is more susceptible to stickers and bee-stings.

    3) Go through the papers that are sent home with your child. Fill-out and sign paperwork as required and return promptly. Don't prograstinate!

    4) Get involved! Join your child's school's PTA or PTO group.

    Have a wonderful school year!
