Just a fun idea...

I haven't been as good as I wanted to be about drying clothes on the line the last two summers. My twins will be two in June, so the last two summers were a little challenging logistically when it came to that sort of thing :o) but this summer will be so much easier since they can play more independently outside while I'm hanging out clothes. So, I decided to come up with a little incentive for myself to make sure I hang out as many loads as possible. Starting May 1, I am going to put $0.10 in a cup every time I hang a load out on the line, and take $0.10 out every time I dry a load in the dryer. At the end of the summer, I'll take my little cup of change and buy myself a little treat. It may only be a few dollars, but I can always go for a nice drink from the drive-through coffee place, lol. Plus, I'll feel like I really earned that little treat rather than feeling guilty for spending a few dollars on myself! I figure this will also make me not procrastinate on sunny days because I won't want to risk leaving the laundry until a rainy day when I have to dry it inside, lol. Feel free to join in my little challenge! :o)

  • I LOVE my clothes line!  DH built it for me last spring, and I've had a few days nice enough to hang clothes in April.

By the time I'm done hanging a load and check on the washer, the line-dry clothes are done!  It's soooo much faster to hang them here in the summer (Northern NV).  Plus it really helps me get the laundry folded/sorted instead of sitting in a basket on the couch.  big smile mini  I'll join in your challenge, tho.  Always nice to have some sort of "pay" from my "day job"!

Have you ever seen the retractable clothes lines? That's what we have and it's great because when we're not using it, you can just retract it back into it's little housing and it's out of the way. There was one like that on our house when we moved in, but it was broken. I loved the idea of it so much that DH found me a replacement for it. We bought ours at a local hardware store, but here's a link to it online in case you're interested in seeing what it looks like. Yes, it's pricey at first, but it will pay for itself after awhile. Just an idea... :o)

  • Last spring out dryer died so the whole spring and summer we used the clothesline to dry clothes.  Then we brokedown and bought a dryer.   This summer I doubt I will ever use the dryer.  I love haning my clothes on the clothesline.  I probably wont even use my dryer until September maybe October.  Seriously, I HATE THE DRYER, uses to much electricity and why not use nature to dry your clothes.  Last summer alone I didnt use the dryer or use the AC and our utlitliy bill which includes water, garbage, sewer, recycling, electricity and gas was only about $80 a month for the summer and most of the fall.  I turn my heat off in mid-April and dont turn it on until late October.  Call me crazy but I love the easy ways to save money.

  • I love hanging my clothes out on the line to dry.  Even during the winter I have a clothes rack in the house.  My parents bought it for me when we go married.  The amish made it and it is very durable.  Very good incentive I'll have to try that to see how many times I hung up clothes. Good for you!!

  • Ha ha...I live in upstate NY, so here's the funny scenario in my head if I tried to line dry clothes during the winter. First, bundle up in coat, hat, mittens, boots. Trudge out through about 2 feet of snow on the ground, to my retractable clothesline, scrape the ice and snow off it to try to get it unfrozen, at which point my clothes would already be frozen solid, hee hee...

  •  I WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO HANG CLOTHES... UNFORTUNATELY OUR CONDO OWNER'S ASSOCIATION DOESN'T ALLOW.. I DO HAVE 2 WOODEN RACKS ON MY PATIO AND FILL THOSE THEN PUT THE REST IN THE DRYER.

  • I just got a dryer rack to put outside so we could save on the dyrer. How much energy does the dryer use anyway? My husband thinks it's dumb but I want to try to save energ and the dryer is loud-on top of the kids running around.

Anyway so far everything except socks/underwear has been on the drying rack. I don't need the wind carrying our undies throughout the neighbor hood(i live in a townhouse/condo an can't have a clothes line so I put the rack on the porch)
