Lesson #1in CafeMom: Profile vs. Homepages - soooo important!

So here you are doing your laundry, hunting other CafeMom'ers pages for clothes and you come a cross a page that is sooooooo long...there's like 20 repeats of everything, so many widgit boxes that "aren't fully set up yet" and every box is on the left column with hardly any widgit boxes on the right.

Doesn't that make you mad!  You have to scroll down for like 5 minutes to get to the bottom where the Laundry or Road Trip game is and then scroll all the way back up if you want to post a "Thanks" in their chatterbox.

If you haven't come across this yet, it's bound to happen.

So what is the deal?  The deal is the page that YOU see when you log on is your HOMEPAGE; what other people see is your PROFILE page - two totally different pages.

Why are there two different pages?  Well if you think about it you can keep your home page very simple, you probably don't need your "10 things about you" list there since you, well, know that already...you probably don't need 10,000 pictures of your children (unless you do want to see them everyday) And you probably don't need all of your business stuff on your homepage as you don't need to advertise to yourself, etc.   So your homepage can have just the stuff you want or need on there so you can access what you need to quickly.

So how does this affect your business marketing????  Well let's say you are posting all over Cafe Mom about your products or business opportunity and they go to your personal company website and then they decide to visit your CafeMom profile to learn more about you....DISASTER!!!!!! If your profile is all messed up!!!!  It's such a simple thing, but likely they might get bored with your page because everything's on the left side with a bunch of repeats and widgit boxes with nothing in them.

When people come to your CafeMom page you want their eye to flow from box to box, you want the colors to be pleasing, but also to reflect your personality...and ladies PLEASE!!! Don't make your widgit boxes clear.  You can't read a darn thing!

So if you haven't taken a look at your profile you might want to, since this is how your potential prospects and customers see you!  This is how you get to it:

So typically you'll see something like this...the upper left box on your homepage, the one with your picture, where you change your mood and thought bubble.  You see the link on the upper right of this box, the one that says "View Your Profile".  Click on this and it will take you to your profile page.

DON'T BE ALARMED AT THE DISASTER THAT IS YOUR PROFILE PAGE!!!!!  Just clean it up the way you want to and be sure to check it every now and then when you add a new widgit or modify any of your pages in any way.

One last thing to keep in mind:  when you switch to your profile page there will be a box right under the one pictured above that says that you are viewing your profile page.  It will push every box down in the left column to accomodate for this notice.  So keep that in mind if you are specifically putting your widget boxes in a certain place.

This last sentance is something I'll post about in the coming week or so - Putting certain widgits in a certain place to attract attention to your company or product.

I hope you enjoyed this!  I had no idea there were 2 different pages that made up my CafeMom profile until I happened to read a popular journal post.  THANK GOODNESS FOR HER POST!!!!!!

Brigitte, do you have anything to add, LOL!!!!!

It took me a while and man my page was out of control!  Definately NOT the way you want your future prospects or customers to see you LOL!

What does everyone else think of this...did you check your profile page and find anything interesting?
