I watched it with my husband tonight as it is his birthday. Generally he doesn't stay awake during the late show. He also has a difficult time following complicated plots, lol. With the plot being orally presented, my husband was able to follow the story (with a little bit of my help here and there but not much). Generally, I have to fill him in more often on films that simply leave it up to your prior knowledge of the tale or by visually seeing. Most of the times the directors do horrid jobs on expressing complex plots with visual store telling alone. Therefore, this movie is good for someone who is unfamiliar with the storyline and children. However, it is annoying for someone who already understands the what, when, and whys.
My husband cannot follow Harry Potter for crap without consistently calling on me to help him explain something. He has not read the books and has never successfully stayed awake during any of their movies. However, he asked very few questions and stayed awake during The Last Airbender.
I am not an anti-Shamalyan. I LOVED The Village. It is one of my favorite movies of all time. The only thing I didn't like about The Last Airbender is that I think it would make an awesome pg-13 movie. More violence, more gore, more adult content. The acting is also somewhat poor in my opinon but they are trying to discuss the story orally because of it's complexity. Also, Ange's character has not come out well. Time restrains suck and Ange has an awesome personally in the story line. Hopefully he is further developed in the next movies.
My husband was very disappointed that the movie ended and that he has to wait for a sequel. I'm excited that he has found a movie he liked. . . He fell asleep during the IMAX 3-D presentation of Avatar, after all. . . LOL>
