Ok, my daughter is only 14 months old but we started getting familiar with the potty REALLY early! SHe has a tendency to get in the bath and then need to poop so she has been pooping on the potty since she was 9-10 months old! But, as good as she is about pooping on the potty, peeing is a WHOLE other story! I don't know how to get her to recognize the urge to pee or the sensation. I know that there are pull ups that let u feel wet or give you a cold sensation when you pee in them, but is there any other (& cheaper) way to get her to figure out the peeing part? If she happends to pee during her potty-sitting-time she gets TONS of praise & excitement, but she hasn't appeared to make a link yet.... PLEASE HELP!
Most professionals agree that kids don't get the ability to control bladder muscles (being able to 'hold it' or to release at set times like when on the toilet) until around 18 months so you might want to wait a bit longer on the pee part.
Pull ups are a waste of money for most kids. They keep peeing in them just like they do diapers because there are no negative consequences when they pee in them. Your best bet is to go straight to underwear from the beginning. Most kids need that experience of pee running down their legs to decide that using the toilet is the best option.
This is the method I recommend to train: http://www.cafemom.com/group/562/forums/read/4235060/3_Day_Potty_Training_Post. I used it with my son when he was 23 months old and it worked great for us.
Let me know if you have questions.
I actually came up with a neat idea and it's working GREAT! (Kinda) I wanted her to recognize when sh was peeing (& show some sort of body language that I could recognize).
I took a few wipies out of the box and let them dry out in the air.... then, I folded one up & placed it in the front of the diaper. She peed earlier and she stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes got HUGE and she grabbed at her diaper! So, we went to the potty! So, now it's a matter of getting her to connect the two and start peeing in the potty! YAY! If it helps anyone else, give this a try! Its cheaper than buying the special pull ups and it obviously works!
