Trying to potty train my severe language delayed son...

It seems like a total uphill battle and a friend of mine showed me this group. So here's the scenerio.

DS#1 is 2.5 years old as of November 9. He has a mind of his own. He is quite the physical guy. That being said, he is being seen by Early Intervention for a (pretty severe imo) speech delay. He is 30 months, and at 27 months, he was scoring at a 21-22 month language level. From 27 months on, he has progressed, but only to the point where he is saying a few more words, imitating etc.

I've been told by my EI speech pathologist and by his OT that potty training CAN wait. His language isn't up to what it should be, and that I shouldn't push it.

I think thats a load of crap. My son, like any child would probably THRIVE on new experiences, and he'd probably be proud of himself.

Unfortunatly they arent giving me much advice/support on this matter. They keep "enabling" me/him to wait by saying "Well, his preschool dosn't require him to be P.T., so you have time. NO, we don't have time. I don't have money to keep shelling out for diapers for my almost 3 year old AND my almost 1 year old!

So I am wondering if anyone here has pottytrained a speech delayed, otherwise healthy/normal 2.5 year old? If so, do you have any pointers for me?

my son is 31 months and his speeach is at a 23-25 month level so i know what you are going through there. the way his speeach therapist told us to do it is to have a potty chair in the living room and leave it on catoons for him all day. put him either in reagular underwear or leave him naked and every 20 minutes or so ask him if he needs to go and put him on it. and after a few days you can start increasing the time. i started with my son 2 1/2 weeks ago and he's done really well. i've noticed when he needs to go he'll start playing with the chair or sit on it. he will more than likely have several accidents that first week so make sure you have plenty of underwear if you go that route. good luck, hope this helped.

Honestly, a child doesn't have to be able to verbalize they need to use the toilet in order to successfully potty train or else people that are mute would never be able to train and use the toilet.

This is the method I recommend: http://www.cafemom.com/group/562/forums/read/4235060/3_Day_Potty_Training_Post.  It's what I used with my son when he was 23 months old.  He doesn't have any language delays but from what I've read, this type of approach can work with any child.  A lot of moms have used the method with another child in tow and still had a lot of success.

Let me know if you have any questions.
