Been dreading this since I found out I was pregnant with a boy.....
I have to admit...I am scared to death about the whole potty training thing. My son is 2 1/2 and we have bought a training toilet...that he has peed in a few times and even pooed once. The whole thing just kinda freaks me out. He still doesn't really TELL me that he has to go. Last night he was just grabbing himself and saying "Ouch Ouch Ouch" so I took him to use the potty and he went. That was the first time he had done that....
He does sit down to pee.....which I dunno if that's the right way to go about it???
Also I'm nervous about public restrooms and him needing to go when we are out.
I give him stickers when he uses the potty...that seems to really get him to do his business (although it doesn't work every time)
How do I make this a less stressful experience?
This is what I used to train my son: http://www.cafemom.com/group/562/forums/read/4235060/3_Day_Potty_Training_Post. He was 23 months at the time and he is my first and only child. It worked great for us.
If a child isn't potty trained, they typically don't know the "need to go" feeling so they can't tell you they need to go. That's part of the training process.
As for sitting him to do everything, that's what I recommend. That way they don't get confused when they should sit and when they shouldn't. The transition to standing to pee isn't a big deal, really.
Let me know if you have other questions. :-)
We just started potty training this week and I'm training DS to sit down. I figure it's less confusing for pooping that way and he can learn to stand later. As for taking him to a public restroom, we haven't yet, but then I'll take him in to the ladies room with me and hold him up over the toilet. It's totally acceptable for little boys to go into the bathroom with their moms. He goes into public restrooms with me all the time when I go.
Also, one thing my son really likes is sitting on the big potty with a potty seat because he likes to flush his stuff away. (may be a gross boy thing) He likes to look at it, talk about it and then flush it. :)
Just go with it. Accidents happen. (We've changed a lot of underwear!!) The less stressed out you are the less stressed out he will be and it will go alot smoother. Good luck!!
