My son has been pee trained for a year now. He is turning 4 in february. I cannot get him to poop in the potty. I have done everything, treats, toys, no pull ups , buying new underwear, letting him pick it out, etc.... What has happened is , his daycare/preschool has a policy that he has to wear a pull up if he has accidents at school. Which has taught my kid over the last year that he pees in the potty and poops in the pull up. When I have complained enough to his school about this they have allowed me to try to bring him in underwear but he always has an accident. And if hes pooping in a pullup at school and in underwear at home, i have no influence on his potty training whatsoever! I want to know when it became socially acceptable to allow the kids to poop in their pants till age 4? Pullups are just a diaper , but no one seems to be willing to work with me on it because it is so messy . On the weekends , i do see their point, my son doesnt want to sit on the potty. Ive tried poop jail with absolutely no sucess. They tell me at school this is a power struggle my son has developed and for some reason he is not ready. Ive seen this first hand. Do I give up and wait till he is ready? Everytime I think about it I get so stressed out and start crying.

When you did poop jail how long did you stick with it?

Have you tried putting him in a cool/lukewarm shower to clean him up when he poops on himself?

I tried one day and he was so stubborn he held it the entire time. Ive done the showers because it is so messy that it has to be a strictly business shower without play.  Im honestly so stressed out about it.!

You didn't give poop jail enough time to work.  Sometimes some kids need to be put in there and kept in there several days (other than sleeping and meals).  They have to know that you are totally serious about keeping them in there until they poop.

What do I say to him when he is in poop jail and do I gate the area and walk away or do i sit outside the door? The last time I did it I was right outside the door for fear he might turn on the hot water etc....

Once you take his clothes off and get him into the bathroom, just tell him that the dr said he can't come out of the bathroom until he goes poop.  Then put the gate up to keep him in there and walk away.  You can check periodically to make sure he's not into things he shouldn't be and if he is, just get in, take care of it (with little to no interaction with him) and walk back out.  He will probably fuss and cry and pitch a fit but stand firm.  Remind him that he's going to be put back into the bathroom every day until he goes poop in the toilet.  Stick to your guns and don't let up.  Otherwise, you are giving him all the power.  Remind him that it's up to him how long he stays in the bathroom since only he knows when he needs to poop and once he goes poop, he's free to go out and play.

A lot of other moms have tried it and at first they were concerned about it as well.  But if you stick to your guns, more than likely you'll get him pooping in the toilet.  The thing is, once you start it, you need to keep doing it every day you are home until pooping in the toilet is no longer an issue for him at all.  Most times it takes a really long time the first few times.  Then he knows you are serious and it gets shorter and shorter until there's no longer a need to do it.

This weekend my little guy decided to go into the bathroom and do it himself!! Big sucess pooping. But he is not consistant with it. The next day he held and held until nighttime when he went in the pullup at night. So I may have to take the pullup away at night....

Well it looks as though the little guy is finally poop trained. After 2 agonizing years of hell he finally decided he was going to do it!!! I almost cant believe it. he now tells me he is going to go poop and just does it, after two years ! I think what really worked was having one of his friends stay the night who is potty trained and it was like he wanted to be a big boy just like his friend. So i made a big deal, took him to the store, bought him brand new underwear and now he gets a kick out of picking out his underwear each day. The other thing I did was put toys on the fireplace mantel( nothing major like dollar store stuff) , and made a big deal when he did go. Really i was so worried- he turns 4 this february! And finally we were at a christmas party this weekend, and he even stopped what he was doing and said (mom i have to poop)! What a big deal to poop in a foreign place!!!!! Im so excited !

LOL now on to the night time training!
