Cannot get my 3 1/2 yr old to go in the potty

My son is 3 1/2, and he is trained to pee in the potty, but refuses to poop there.  He will go to preschool, and poop in his udnerwear, or will hold it all day, and come home and do it here.  We have tried everything and nothing seems to work.  My mom even tried turning the lights off in the bathroom and singing the ABC's thinking it would calm him down enough to go (quite a sight!).  He doesn't say it hurts, or anything, just comes up to us after he is finished so we can change his underwear.  Any advice???

How long has he been fully pee trained?

Is he using the adult toilet with or without a potty ring or is he using a potty chair?

How have you been dealing with the poopy underwear?

Has he ever pooped in the potty?

I know how you are feeling.  I have a 3 1/2 year old son to and he is having problems pooping in the toilet.  He will pee with no problem.  I hope he does it soon before he goes to pre-school.  I hope you have some progress soon.
