All right. I'm making mine more of a 3.5 day method. We have a mommy daughter art class Saturday morning that I've already paid for and don't want to lose that money. So after we get do that and get groceries (since I won't be leaving the house for awhile) we're going to start the training.
Here are my questions....naps, and bed time. I'm taking off work to do this, should I just keep the normal work schedule that way I can wake her up half hour before to use the potty? Also, (and this one is going to sound stupid) any carpet cleaner you guys can recommend to get the pee smell out? I haven't had to deal with this issue before since we use pull-ups, so I just wanted to ask.
Thanks in advance mommas, and God bless.
I'd keep a regular schedule.
The biggest key to keeping pee smells out of the carpet is to get the urine out as quickly as you can after it's hit the floor (after getting your child to the toilet and taken care of). What I did when I trained my son is I had regular towels to put on the spots and I would press down on the spots with the towel with my foot/hand to try to get as much pee out of the carpet and padding (if any got that far down in the short amount of time). Then I'd scrub the area with a baby wipe and it was plenty. Smells and stains and such come from letting the pee stay in the carpet and seep into the padding instead of getting it up ASAP.
Keep in mind that typically it only takes a few really big messes before your child starts learning to control their bladder muscles and they start to stop the flow of urine once they realize it's happening. So, there aren't tons of huge puddles of pee to clean up. And if you stay in one room as close to the toilet as possible, the messes will be in one area so you can get a steam cleaner to the area to clean it out very easily.
On a side note, as mentioned in the initial welcome message you got, this forum is very slow moving. Most people that come to the group are just like you- in the midst of training so they are looking for answers as well. The main people that respond with advice are myself (I'm group owner) and the group administrator and we are both school teachers so we aren't here during the day. I know you are anxious to get as much info as possible but there's no need for all the "bumps". :-)
I too cleaned the carpet right away. I used a bucket of water with Oxyclean. That seemed to work fine -- and we have white carpet. :)
