Hi, I am new to Cafe mom. A friend suggested that I join to get some advice and support from other moms that might be going through the same thing with their children. My son turned 4 in May and I am at a loss. He was finally diagnosed with Encopresis. Basically, it's a condition that is more common in boys than girls and it targets children over the age of 4. He is scared to poop!! He holds it because he is afraid of it hurting. So it turns into a vicious cycle of constipation and laxitives. He has had hernia surgery do to the straining of trying to poop. And the laxitives turn into a leaky mess that can last up to a few days and i'm always worried about a blow-out at pre-school. And suppositories are tramatic on both of us. Can anyone relate?? I need some advice please.
Have you tried giving him privacy when it's obvious that he needs to poop?
We have tried everything. We think anyway...
His doctor said to schedule his poops. Which is really hard but we are giving it a shot. He said to give him 2 adult servings of Milk of Mag before dinner and then sit him on the pot for 15 minutes after dinner. Also to make it as fun as possible. So we are reading books, listening to music and even considering putting in a tv. I guess my son associates negativitywith pooping. Like its a curse or something. Its VERY frustrating. I try to not get upset when he poops his pants but this has been going on since potty training. He is pee trained. It's like he freezes up when it comes to potty time. He will poop in a pull up because he can take his time and isn't pressured. Or he has leakage in his underwear from holding it. Thank you for replying and listening.
