Any suggestions on how to get my son who is speech delayed to tell/show that he wants to poop.  He only tells us after he goes in his underwear.

Thanks!

How old is he?

How long have you been potty training?

Are you using rewards? I'd so, what and how do you use them?

He is almost 4. Once he poops in his underwear he will point. Usually happens when he is outside playing or watching videos. He doesn't want to stop to run to the bathroom.

I'm not sure if he understands reward systems other than when he does go to the bathroom we do praise him. It is difficult trying to explain that he did something wrong. I'm not sure if I should discipline him or not with his limited language. He only speaks single words and starting to string some words.

It is frustrating.

Him being able to speak isn't the issue. Plenty of people that never speak a word in their lives get successfully potty trained.

Does he ever get to the toilet to poop before he poops his pants?

Unless there are some other delays, other than just speech, he is more than old enough to understand rewards.

I'm not sure if this will help, but my sister was having a similar problem with her son (same age).  After talking with some other moms she found out that because he was standing to pee it was hampering his need/feeling to go poop on the potty.  Not sure if this is the same for you though.  Once she started making him sit to go potty (not sure if it was all the time or just a few times a day) he started slowing down and pooping.  He was just in a HUGE rush.

A lot of kids need to know that if they don't stop to go potty, that whatever they are doing will be taken away since it's keeping them from taking care of business.
