Great Grandma's Ginger Cake

2 1/2 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon ginger

1 teaspoon cinnamon

2 teaspoon salt

dash - ground cloves

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup shortening

2/3 cup molasses

1 egg, beaten

3/4 cup boiling water

whipped topping

In a medium bowl combine flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, salt, and cloves. Set aside.

In a mixing bowl cream sugar and shortening. Add molasses and egg. Mix well.

Stir in the dry ingredients alternately with water. Mix well.

Pour into a greased 9" square baking pan.

Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 35-40 minutes.

Cool completely. Serve with whipped topping if desired.

yield 9 servings
