I need help ... because no one else has a clue!

Hi everyone, my name is Michelle. I have a 7yr old who was recently diagnosed with Non Verbal Learning Disorder (NLD.) This diagnoses came from a Psychologists after my son's school told me he was mildly mentally retarded. I was very disappointed with the Psychologists because he mailed me my son's results and I never heard from him again. Even though he had promised me a sit down meeting to discuss his findings. So, I immediately went back to my son's Pediatrician for another referral. We were referred to another Psychologists who "works with children on a regular basis." When we arrived at the appointment I was told they had no information on my son they didn't even know his name but they did know they do not except my ex - husbands insurance and if I wanted to see the Doctor it would be $350 out of pocket then and there. So I once again took my son by the hand and walked away without any answers. The next referral was to a Child Evaluation Center 3 hrs from where I live which is not a problem I will drive as far as I need too to help my son. The problem is they do not except the insurance either and it will cost $3000 to $4000 out of pocket. So now I am trying to decide what my next move should be without taking to long to do so because the longer it takes the more it effects my child and his future. There is a lot more to this story like my battle with the school and being told there are no Doctors in this state to help my son but I don't want to overwhelm everyone so I'll stop here. If anyone has any suggestions or knows about NLD or knows someone who does your input would be greatly appreciated.

Have you looked into getting him Medicade, or some form of CHiPS from your state?  If the school sees a problem there are steps that they have to take, my son's Tier 1 right now, and you can push it!!
Talk to the school councler, see what they have to say.  Go above the actual school that you are at and talk to someone else.  There is always help, just hard for us to find it!

I have considered having him dropped from my ex - husbands insurance and trying to get medicaid. Because, I was told everyone has to accept medicaid (not sure if that is true?) As for the school they told me in our last meeting unless I allow them to label him as "mildly mentally retarded" there is nothing they can do to help. I refused to allow them to do that.

Non-verbal could mean that he has some form of autism.  Google the Autism Society for your state and ask them for a referral.  Be sure to ask the office whether they accept your insurance or not.

I would also go to social services, even though he has insurance, and see if you can get him supplemental medicaid. They may also be able to refer you a mental health professional or organizations that can assist you and advocate for you.

Lastly, go apply for disability for him.

Hi!  I can't really give you any advice on nld, however I know that not everyone has to accept Medicaid.  In fact, I've had problems finding doctors and especially dentists who will accept it.

I'm sorry I know what is like to struggle to find a Doctor to accept your insurance.
