  • Been there.  You said you tried diet. Did you use the Feingold diet?

Ask your Dr to order a food panel Rast test for IgE & IgG antibodies.  The IgG is for delayed reaction.  He could be sensitive to certain ingredients.  We had to eliminate wheat, soy, dairy, & eggs from my son's diet. But it was so worth it.  He did a complete turn around.

  • My daughter went through all the ADHD medicines and they all caused alot of side effects. I was not happy with any one of them and the one complaint I had was IRITABILITY and meanness. She was quick to fight. Like she was cocked and loaded.

I was unhappy with her on and off the medicines.

I started to journal EVERY day the moods and the situations. I did the diet. The diet seemed to work really well. I also found alot of allergies. But I found it was impossible for her to stick to this diet. Unfair even.

We just got a DX of Mood diorder and now she is on Abilify 2 mg @ night 7 weeks ago, works WONDERFULL!!!!!! lets put it this way, we laugh with each other and joke. She text's kids w/o fighting with them. They don't irritate her, she still hits her brother but hey we still are working on this.

I got a Theripist to come to our home 3 hours a week with the Mood disorder Dx ( she has been comming since October 2008. This Theripst taught us how to manage her.

I am hoping when summer ends and my daughter goes back to school we can keep this up.

I am telling you my story so hopefully I can help you in some way. I like to see when there are sucess stories posted. I have learned from them in the past.

  • By the wat your son sounds like my daughter. She had to be the boss in play and with the family. Was inflexable in her way of thinking. You could not convince there was any other way of thinking other than hers.

  • That sounds like my son.  He is 8 and was diagnosed with ADHD, bipolar when he was 4, he was later diagnosed with OCD.  He is a very loving child, not just my opinion, but he has a very difficult time with compulsion.  He just does things before he has time to think about it.  Later he is remorseful (probably more because he got in trouble).  We tried the diet thing.  That did nothing, caveat - changing protein for grains helped a little.  He is on Adderall, prozac, and risperdall.  The medicines have been a godsend and he will never be off them.  But he still has issues.  Maybe your child has some of the same issues and may be diagnosed with something like that.  Good luck

  • You are not alone, although sometimes it feels that way.  I have an almost 9 year old daughter who was diagnosed at age 5 although I knew something was amiss at age 3.  Not like other children. Very smart and intuitive.  She has been on everything.  She was on abilify for a year and it worked great. One day it quit.  She is now on trilepdan (a anti-seizure med) and straterra for focus.  She is ADHD and possibly bi-polar.  A double whammy.  Those two meds worked great for about 2 1/2 months.  Now she has been taken off Straterra again due to anger issues. Her doctor is on vacation until July 16th so we are holding our breath.  She is acting withdrawn and drunk at times.  This often happens with a growth spurt and medicine adjustment.  It is harder with girls due to hormones thrown in the mix.  I tried the health food route with no success.  She has grown like a weed this year and continues to do so.  I hope to get her back on track before school starts in early August.  She knows when her meds are off and is quick to tell me, "mommy my medicine is not working".  When they are working she is outgoing, pleasant and well mannered.  when not working she is angry, hits her brother, yells and throws things.  No focus as well.  She is on the gymnastics team and it helps to use her energy but works the best when she is able to focus.  This is a trying summer.  I am hoping to get her on track again very soon.  Her brother who is 5 has started to mirror her behavior.  This is very stressing.

i know many parents who look at me like my child is out of control.  They do not understand the disability.  I am a teacher and see many other teachers who punish children with this instead of finding a way to accomodate and reach them.  It is only when their meds don't work that you would know something is different from other children.  They are very smart and lovable.:)

Hang in there, sometimes finding the right medicine or combo takes a while and it often has to continually be adjusted.  This is chemistry of the brain we are dealing with after all.  Best of luck!

  • That is so nice to hear that someone understands.  I have had more problems with the teachers and even my own family who think it is a discipline issue.  I feel that I discipline them too much I mean there has to be some sort of punishment when they hurt someone, although, I really try not to ground them for their entire lives (JK) my DH thinks I am too soft as well.  The teachers either don't accomodate at all or too much (to the point that my son can do what ever he wants)  This has been a very trying year, he is the top of his class, but only does mediocre because he is not challenged, I think the teachers are afraid.  My DD who I didn't mention before is 10 and also adhd and bipolar, but so much less so than my son, she is easily maintained on minimal meds (adderall and risperdall - low doses)  She is also at the top of her class, and I am thinking that some of her issues are more attention getters than actual adhd or bipolar.  We are talking to Dr about taking her off meds, but I am so scared that I will screw her up in school that I haven't
