I am looking for any information proving or disproving a correlation between apraxia and autism language disorders. If you have a child previously diagnosed with one or the other share your story please. Thank you!

I know 2 families in my local area who have a child who has both autism and apraxia.

My youngest son was recently diagnosed with apraxia and his older brother has autism.

My 4 yr old was diagnosed with apraxia (oral and verbal) shortly after his 2nd birthday. He is not autistic, and has not show any signs of possible autism.

My son was diagnosed with apraxia shortly after 1 year of age.  He was just recently diagnosed with PDD (autism spectrum disorder) a month ago.  The speech therapist brought out info about the language disorders relating to autism but said she didn't know of any correlation between apraxia and autism.  The reason she doesn't know is because there are no studies.  I am looking for this relationship.  I am hoping to find others who have a family member with both diagnoses also.  If anyone can share anything else it would be great.  Thanks again!

My middle son got diagnosised with apraxia at age 5 and a half. He was in speeach therapy through the school system for a year. I wasn't seeing any changes and felt there had to be more. I took him to children's and my suspicions were correct. He has apraxia of speech. He now goes to private threapy along with specialized classroom. If I don't see even more improvement when he begins kindergarten next year, I may look into a school for the deaf that has a class for hearing children with apraxia.

My daughter was officially diagnosed when she turned 3. We knew she had apraxia from a young age. she also has sensory processing disorder. She is not autistic.

sensory processing disorders are very similar to autism spectrum disorders.  my son had a sensory processing disorder when he was 3, which OT thought had been solved after 2 years of therapy.  A couple years down the road, he was diagnosed with PDD.  Look up autism spectrum disorders :)  I wish I had many years ago.

My 5 year old was diagnosed with apraxia around age 3.  Everyone that encountered him claimed he was a "textbook" case.   He had some sensory trouble but 99% of that has since resolved through therapy.  Recently I was concerned that the apraxia diagnosis might be wrong.  There are MANY children who are misdiagnosed with apraxia.   Anyhow, he just recently had a new evaluation to update his IEP and it's clear now that Apraxia is the correct diagnosis for him.  So my 5 year old has apraxia but is not on the spectrum.

I'm curious for those of you who knee your child was apraxic, how did you know? You can ignore this if you already answered me in my other post.
