As of right now my 4th grader is doing cava, and my 2 & 4 yr olds are homeschooled by me.

I would like to be able to homeschool using  bible based curriculum and being able to work more on certain subjects. Right now it usually takes from 830-330 (sometimes longer. and this includes 2 mandatory hour long online classes) a day to get all the work done and it is only a little in each subject.  id rather concentrate on 1-2 subjects a day so she can really learn it.  How do you do it?

How hard is the process of filing as a private school and the maintaining of it?

any recommendations for bible based curriculum? thanks

  • We are in CA. We are under an umbrella school, and not as a separate private school ourselves.

I do math and English everyday. Monday and Wednesday is then science, Geography and History on Tuesday and Thursday, Art and Music Vary, and Health was on Fridays, but we are currently do a bit here and there throughout the week as well, depending on the actual subject.

DH is in charge of actual Bible teaching. He does it...well, whenever he gets around to it I guess. (He's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more laid back than I am.)

I'm somewhat eclectic and do a bit from this and that.

Some people use Abeka (we use bits and pieces), a family I know likes Weaver and uses that as it does unit studies and both of these are Bible-based (or Christian companies at least) I believe.

  • I don't really have much I can offer, I am sorry.  I am just starting out as my son is only 6 years old.

Though I did want to say that because I have a "mentor" homeschooling mom friend (who is a seasoned HSer of 2 boys-now 16 and 13) I felt confident to make the choice to file privately and it was fairly simple.  I just completed a form (and I was able to do it online).  That's it.  I am required to file this affidavit once a year (some time during the 1st and the 15th of October).

Currently we are "notebooking" using Five In A Row with the Christian supplement; using All About Spelling and MathUSee.  I will also be incorporating The Well Trained Mind soon.  And since we are very active in Awana at our church I also use the verses from his handbook as part of our curriculum.

I am not sure what I will do next year... but I think I will also be looking into using a Christian based curriculum.  I do plan to continue with the FIAR though.  We really like all of the stories and it doesn't really take up much time.  I have to say that we are enjoying the ability to go at our own choosing, depth and pace with things.  I am so glad we chose the route we did and didn't go with a charter of any kind.  No slight is intended to those who use them though - some of my best HSing friends use them!  We each have to do what is right for our children and our families.  And, there is no one right way.  We are all unique and the way we choose to educate our children will also be unique.

My friend has HSd privately right from the beginning and in talking with her, I feel confident that I can do the same. Granted, this is MY friend and a VERY trusted one at that.  But I am not worried about filing or maintaining anything.

But, I will say... HSLDA membership is recommended ('cause well... you just never know...)

May you be blessed in whatever you end up doing.

  • I home school through a charter school ~ classified as public independent study. If you choose to use the state adopted curriculum it is free. Although many families at the charter school purchase their own materials. The school offers enrichment classes once a week - everything from a constitution class, to sewing to horsemanship....- and field trips - many are free or there may be a nominal cost.

  • We homeschool through a charter school.  There are those that use religious curriculum within our community and those that don't.  We get 1600 per child which most of it goes towards their martial arts, piano and violin classes, as well as some art supplies and curriculum.  This year I chose k-12 books for my two older children who are both in 4th grade.  We are not in CAVA and have chosen not to do the online portion.  We do thematic units to supplement a lot of stuff in Science and Social-Studies/History.  For us, it's what works, there are many other options out there though.  Good Luck!

  • Hi, I'm new to this group, i have been homeschooling for almost 10 years, I have a 5, 6, and 16. I go thru a Charter School and they provide the money for me to buy all the curiculum from this website http://www.core-curriculum.com and they have bible based and regular curiculum. Hope this help. I also live in California. If you are interested the Charter School that i'm dealing with is South Sutter Charter School they send out a teacher every two weeks or once a week it's your choice they are really helpful.

    have a nice day

  • Thanks for the info, but I am really not interested in doing any kind of schooling with the public schools at all.  I dont like having to meet with the teacher and have her tell me how I should be doing things. I def dont want one coming every week or so. Right now they just ask for one sample from each subject once a quarter, so its not that bad, but I defintley dont want to deal with the public school system anymore. My daughter is very disinterested and I want her to have SOME control over what she learns and let her learn some things she wants to. I have gotten so much info on becoming a private school and schooling on our own from other moms that do it, so I am feeling so much more confident in doing so. I know its not going to be easy, but I know it will keep my daughter and myself less stressed and happy. The cost doesnt really matter, I am not buying a ton of curriculum for every subject. Ive found Science through Sonlight, Math through teaching textbooks, and am using "What your 5th grader needs to know' as a guide while letting her choose some subjects she wants in there.  Theres just too much stress in it now, even cutting out some of the work that she doesnt need to do. We feel stressed that 'This has to be done  by this time...' ugh, no more.

But I def thank you all for your info, Ive looked into all of those options, but still feel that this is the way that will fit us best. ;) Thanks!
