I am thinking about getting my 2yr old DS a leapfrog for christmas. He can count to 10 and identify all those numbers, and he knows his ABCs and can identify about 90% of the letters. We are working on letter sounds whenever he shows the interest too.
I am hoping to find a "computer" toy that he can grow with - something that will interest him now but will still be useful a few years from now with different programs or games. If there is one that does early letter sounds/ reading/ numbers/ early math/ etc that would be great.
Which Leap Frog computer/toy do you all LOVE? Is there something else out there (not leapfrog) that you all like better?
THANKS!!
Hi Rowan's Mom, Not sure if this is what you are looking for but when my son was 2 I purchased (through craig's list) Letter Factory DVD's from Leap Frog. In less than 2 weeks he learned the phonics song. Leap Frog also makes a DVD called Math Circus which he also loved loved loved. I highly recommend the whole series. I believe there are about 4 or 5 of them. My girlfriend said that Walmart sales them. You shouldn't have a problem finding them at stores like Target etc etc.
Blessings
you can also find the dvds at your local library, that way you can see if he likes them before you buy them.
We have Leapsters that are great & VERY durable! They are the best hand held educational game that I have found-i guess we have had them 2 yrs now. They take it w/ them everywhere. They have been beat up & dragged around, thrown & still keep going-no problem. They even asked for new games for them for Christmas.
We have(had-i threw it away) a V-Smile that connected to the TV. The boys only played w/ it alittle bit & we were always needing to change the batteries in the remote. It was rather a waste.
They like the Nintendo DS thingy but they aren't educational @ all. I don't think anyway.
We bought the Wii finally this yr to give them for Christmas. Since we haven't used it yet, I don't have a clue if they will like it. Doesn't seem like a learning thing though. Maybe some games are?? idk??

Check out Zoodles, an educational web browser that constantly stays updated with fun, age-appropriate games for kids 2 - 8! Not quite handheld like a Leapfrog, but we're working towards that! The games focus exactly on the things you listed: early reading and math, letter/number recognition, etc..! Hope you get a chance to check out, let me know what you think :)

I was about to say the same thing! My son was having a very hard time getting the sounds down. In 2 weeks he has 97% of the letters sounds and recongition down pat! He loves loves the Letter Factory dvd. We tested it by getting it on Netflix, and recently bought it for $10 at Target. Its his favorite DVD. He'll pick that over ANY of his movies to watch. :)
Hi, i have 2 dd and they are 5, 6 I bought them for christmas cool computer thing and it's totally fun, you can hook it up on your personal computer and they play on it like if it was a regular computer and the fun thing is that they don't mess up anything on your computer. Here is a picture. My girls don't use it anymore i am trying to sell it so someone else can enjoy it. I bought them another thing it's like a computer but it hooks up to the tv.

My DD and my cousin's three children learned 100% of their phonics in less than two weeks with the LeapFrog video, "Letter Factory." It is amazing. My dd is only 21 months, and has known her phonics perfectly for a month now. My SIL kept refusing to follow my advice, and finally, after my dd was reading words that her 4.5 year old couldn't - she bought the video. (He still didn't know his phonics until the video) She says he has most of them down after two times of watching it. I got my dd the click start computer for Christmas. I've heard from teachers that Leapfrog is the best for learning.
