Can anyone suggest how to make homeschooling work financially?
I have a few years first, but I worry about getting by on one income.
Who says you have to have one income? My husband and I both work part time, so that neither one of us has to spend too much time away from home, or the boys. And we both take off Thursdays and Fridays, so we have two full days of family time. We share both the financial responsibilities, and the home-school responsibilities.
There is the homeschooling group Homeschool 101 (On a Budget) and there is all kinds of free stuff online. If you just cruise through some of the old posts here on HH, you will find all kinds of resources online that are free. Plus there are the three groups (Homeschooling and Teaching Curriculum Resources------Homeschooling Resources-----Units and Themes) that I'm sure have links to free stuff. Good luck.......
There are so many free resources out there. First of all use your library and surrounding libraries all you can. Also about a year ago I bought a book called "Home School Your Child For Free" from a book store for $20 and it goes from pre-school to graduation and is broke out by subject. It is great. Good luck.
We have lived off of one income for 7 years now. We cut out all of the unnecessary things, we budget and I put together my childrens cirriculum. We also buy memberships to our favorite places, which saves us money since we can go all year long.
We've been living on one income for 11 years now. A lot of it depends on your lifestyle and the amount of the one income.
We don't have a huge house payment. Our payment is very reasonable.
We don't have car payments.
We don't take a big vacation.
We don't buy expensive clothing or shoes.
We don't have cable.
We don't go out to movies.
We don't rent movies, and when we do, we get them from the library for $1 or less.
There's other cost-cutting things that we do, but it wasn't intended for reducing expenses, it was just a lifestyle choice: I don't buy bread. I bake all of our bread. We don't have any convenience foods in the house. I cook every night. We don't buy soda or juice. I have a large pantry and freezer and I shop sales. Both are well stocked. I used homemade green cleaning products.
Buying used or trading books around works for us.
There is a website called Freely Educate. They have all kinds of specials and other free or cheap things. :-)
Welcome and good luck too, kit_manson!! : ))

We do very similar to this. You can make anything work financially if you cut out waste/unneeded debt. We do take vacations, but we plan in advance for them and benefit from that with huge discounts on things we are interested in. We do have cable, but only pay $20 a month for it. Basic package, nothing more, and we are contemplating getting rid of THAT (we really don't watch it, and when it IS on, we are heartbroken at the filth and moral decay on there.)
We rent FREE movies at blockbuster express, redbox (by using free movie codes that come out frequently) and the library.
You can make it work!!!
