My children are 5, 3, and 8 months old we have been using curriculums since our oldest was 3/4. He is now a very smart 5 yr old who hates school. I never meant for this to happen. Recently my dh took a new job 3 states away. I packed up the kids and our clothes and moved to my inlaws home while we look for a house. I've had some time to rethink our school issues. When I thought about things I came to the conclusion that we are curious creatures who want to learn. Unfortunately, todays school system breaks that will to learn and makes a lot of people feel like failures. At 16 I dropped out of HS and hated school and learning. It took almost 10 yrs for me to decompress from 11 yrs of government school. Now at 25 I am eager to learn. In the last yr I have taught myself to knit, started learning German, started learning about gardening, and become an avid watcher of documentaries. I've even got into politics a bit. I still don't have a hs diploma or ged (which I really want) mainly bc I still harbor the fear of failure. I don't want my children to feel like failures for the things they have not accomplished, but rejoice in the things they have. I've just started to realize we have an entire lifetime to learn. So after a week long trip to Disney world (where I used my German speaking skills in epcot) we will be starting our unschool journey. I'm am nervous, anxious, excited, and scared, but I know deep down inside my children will learn what they need to know, be happier in the process, and follow their dreams.
Welcome to the wonderful world of unschooling. I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised by just how much your children learn by exploring the world around them. There will be days when you feel like they aren't learning anything, or when you feel like you are taking the 'lazy' approach. However, if you just trust in yourself, and trust in your children, you can get through those times. Good Luck!!
