I have been trying the unschooled approach for the last 3 school days. I am not sure how to tell my husband who i believe that wont support me in this. When he asks me what the kids have been doing i do not know how to really answer him. So fair i have had kids playing little house in the prairie, making honey. making biscuit. My son is right now working with my husband doing carpentry. I do have things that i have to do for the state. This is the last year that i have to havea minimum course of study for the state. The unschooled approach will be much easier next year.
most men dont understand the difference. When he asks what they did today just say we had fun. they learned to measure by making biscuits, we learned science by making honey. etc.
I'm glad you're trying unschooling! I'd just tell your husband the things you're doing. I agree with Halinbray. You can make it sound "schooly" to tame his fears. Gently remind him that there is learning in everything. You can always throw in some edcational games or dvd's. The kids will still be having great fun, and it will be things you can write down for the state. Keep having fun! Learning is best when you're having fun!

Have you tried reading the Little house books to your kids? The other day while reading books it had an interesting science lesson wove into the story. Have fun. Maybe do something written may help. Something tangible you can show him but still going with your theme.
Playing Little House = drama class
Making honey = science and home ec
Making biscuits = home ec, math, even science as cooking is a science (chemistry)
Carpentry = math, technology, life skills, art
I live in NY and we have to write quarterly reports so I've gotten really good at breaking life stuff down into schooly sounding subjects. If you need any help with picking things apart when it comes time for your state stuff, just ask. :-)
