I have been trying the unschooled approach for the last 3 school days. I am not sure how to tell my husband who i believe that wont support me in this. When he asks me what the kids have been doing i do not know how to really answer him. So fair i have had kids playing little house in the prairie, making honey. making biscuit. My son is right now working with my husband doing carpentry. I do have things that i have to do for the state. This is the last year that i have to havea minimum course of study for the state.  The unschooled approach will be much easier next year.

most men dont understand the difference. When he asks what they did today just say we had fun. they learned to measure by making biscuits, we learned science by making honey. etc.

I'm glad you're trying unschooling! I'd just tell your husband the things you're doing. I agree with Halinbray. You can make it sound "schooly" to tame his fears.  Gently remind him that there is learning in everything. You can always throw in some edcational games or dvd's. The kids will still be having great fun, and it will be things you can write down for the state. Keep having fun! Learning is best when you're having fun!

Have you tried reading the Little house books to your kids?  The other day while reading  books it had an interesting science lesson wove into the story.  Have fun.  Maybe do something written may help.  Something tangible you can show him but still going with your theme.

2 moms liked this

Playing Little House = drama class

Making honey = science and home ec

Making biscuits = home ec, math, even science as cooking is a science (chemistry)

Carpentry = math, technology, life skills, art

I live in NY and we have to write quarterly reports so I've gotten really good at breaking life stuff down into schooly sounding subjects. If you need any help with picking things apart when it comes time for your state stuff, just ask. :-)

Accurately playing Little House could also qualify as history: they would have to do things without modern conveniences: electricity, appliances, cars etc.

We are just starting unschooling and don't have to report anything to the state, but I like to break everything up into subject and write down what we did that day. It helps me ease my fears. I have a notebook for each subject and write down everything educational that we do. Maybe you could try that (some Unschool blogs have sheets you can print out to have everything you did on x day in 1 sheet. Then when your husband asks you can just hand it overt to him or read it off. I'verea used that we do WAY more through unschooling than through School at home. GL!
