I'm teaching a Geography class at our cooperative this semester....I knew it would only be a matter of time before I did a lapbook in one of my classes! Well I decided to do a unit on Pirates. It's a fun way of learning some science, geography, history and myths. Last week we made the lapbook and the students colored a pirate picture for the cover and made their compass. This week they'll be filling out some of the lapbook and making their treasure maps. It's been so much fun!

Did you know there is a difference between a sea and an ocean? Did you know it was very (VERY) rare for a pirate to get a treasure that included gold and jewels? Mostly they got spices, fabric, and food stuffs. Did you know why pirates had a gold earring? (it was supposedly enough gold to cover the costs of a funeral). I didn't realize the Jolly Roger flag was first used by the Templar Knights - the name came from the French term "Joulie Rouge" which means "red flag." I also didn't know the differences between a Buccaneer and a Privateer - did you know a buccaneer was first a pirate on land in the Caribbean? They got their name from the french term 'boucan' which mean...BBQ (well it literally means 'to grill')! Seriously they were known for their BBQ, because they often stole pigs and since refrigeration wasn't yet invented, they used a mix of spices and fire to preserve the meat (taught to them by the Arawak Indians). . . It always amazes me the holes in my own education!

So, I've published my pirate lapbook if anyone wants to get it -
