Everything I've read talks about apologia but it just doesn't hold his attention enough for him to get into it. I would like real books but I'm not sure what varied subjects to get. I'm looking for general science - any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated?

I've never used this and I don't know if it is specifically for dyslexic children, but it looks kind of interesting. You can get it for online or in books. There is one part of it that is free. ( I never could find what age groups/grade it is for)
http://www.superchargedscience.com/ is great. There is a free newsletter but if you sign up for the online program or purchase the entire program most of it is visual and experimental. My boys are not dyslexic but they hate writing and reading for school but they love this science program! They even go online and read more because they are so excited about science.
What does your son want to study? What does he think he would like to try? I recommend following his interest right now. Chemistry is such a fun one to start on. So many fun experiments. I recommend Real science Odyssey and noeo homeschool science. The last one costs more but it uses a Charlotte Mason/ Classical approach. We really enjoy both of them
I know I will need to start paying attention to requirements for 9th grade before too long so I'm trying to get a jump on that now. I looked up general science to see what it entailed so for now we are checking out library books on the various subjects within that subject but it's not very structured.
The Jason Project looks very interesting!! My son walked in while I was looking at the site and started picking out the subjects he was interested in just in case I was going to buy anything. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!!
You can't do better than this.... It's the entire science curriculum in comics. And it's based on the national USA curriculum. 6th, 7th and 8th grade. http://www.teachwithcartoons.com/
