If you were going to pay for a curriculum, and you were going to be homeschooling for the first time, what would you pick? We live in a non-English speaking country and want to do some homeschooling while he learns the language and then send him to a Portuguese school maybe next year (he is a SUPER sensitive kid and hasn't learned any Portuguese the last 6 months we've been here). I was considering k12, but after hearing a few ppl say the lesson were super boring, now I don't know. He loves educational computer and video games, so I was hoping there would be fun lessons like that. I mean, why not make learning fun?
Possibly you could look into Time4Learning ($20/month--full curriculum that you might want to supplement some--secular) or you could check into Switched On Schoolhouse (full curriculum from Alpha Omega, a Christian company--cd-rom). We use the elementary spanish for DD and she really likes it. I'm checking into the geography for next year.
I know what you mean about making it fun. DD really likes learning from computer-tutors.
Thanks! I'll check those out. The k12 is $72/month, so $20 seems super cheap!!! We are actually willing to pay a lot bc our only choices are private schools and the 2 in English are $30k/year!

You can get free worksheets off the Internet. http://www.tlsbooks.com/preschoolworksheets.htm is good. I saved worksheets onto my computer and then sent them to my husband to give to my youngest brother-in-law who is in college and for my husband's 23 nephews and nieces who don't know any English. Also just reading books to your son that are in English, having movies in English is a good way to pick up the language. I find that watching Arabic cartoons and Arabic news stations online is a good way to help me pick up my husband's language.
We use Sonlight. Its Christian based, although you can take out the Bible lessons to make it a bit more secular. You can either get it all boxed together for ease of use, or pick and choose different brands for science, writing, and math. Its a literature based curriculum, so there are lots of books to read. We love it. It has lots of link to go with it for looking up specific things in each book on the internet, but its not internet based and doesnt have internet games and stuff.
