Quoting Love.My.Soldier:

I started homeschooling only 2 weeks ago. It was actually really easy and the people I talked to were very nice and helpful. I pulled them out of school with no problems. There is a great used book store in Fayetteville that has a lot of great books for starting out!

Quoting skarlet:

Cumberland co here but i am not homeschooling yet. Have you all always been homeschoolers or did u pull your children from public school in NC? What steps did you all take first?

Do you have a number that works for the DNPE? because I have tried calling but the numbers online are all disconnected. Did you just file paper work with them and check your children out of school or file something with cumberland county as well? I called cumberland county and they said call DNPE because homeschooling has nothing to do with them. When we were in VA and I was home schooled my mother had to file paper work with the state and the county.

I just pulled my kids out of school. No paperwork had to be filed. I will get you the number and message it to you. You can do it all by email and fax so it only takes a couple days to get your approval back.

Western Ky. area

Paducah is kind of a small town, but it's the largest in extreme western KY. Just wondering if there's anyone from the larger area, say from Owensboro/Evansville/Madisonville to Paducah/Metropolis to Murray, KY/northwest TN areas. I know there are Nashvillers, but that's about a 2- to 3-hour drive. There are a few local groups here (LAMP is the first to pop in my head and that's centered in Murray).

Just curious :D

I lived in Mississippi for about eight years a bit south of Hattiesburg. We are now back in my home state of Louisiana.

Mississippi's homechooling laws are so easy to comply with. It makes it simple to specialise a child's curriculum to suit their needs without worry about missing some step in the state's requirements.

The downside for us was that in the little rural town we were in there was too little support and activities for homeshoolers. We were on our own and had to make efforts for the kids to have things to do and be in contact with other kids.

Look into peaknetwork.org. They are a great inclusive group and have a wealth of information. Are you closer to Jackson or Hazelhurst? I do know some homeschoolers in Crystal Springs as well. The Jackson Peak group always has a lot of activities, I wish we lived closer so that we could participate.

Eastern TN?

Posted by
on Jan. 19, 2010 at 7:15 PM

We live in East TN. A few years back, in our area, one particular church brought about a big wave of homeschooling. However, most all of those have fell off to the side, and it is now down to just a few (4 moms mostly who meet together every other week)....But, on the upside, between the 4 of us, we have 14 kids! Sometimes, the number can climb upwards to 20, if one or two of the other moms come.

Anyone else out there?

We're in East TN! Mine are 10, 8 and 3. We go to Borderview Christian in Elizabethton. There are many homeschoolers up here and we belong to a great (Christian) homeschool group that meets once a month, in Johnson City, for a game day for the kids (or other activity, in March we were teaching the kids about cooking and they made their own lunches of pizza and cupcakes). We also have a mom's night out once a month where all us mom's (or those of us who can arrange babysitting) get out and just talk for hours! It's great. But I'd love to meet more homeschoolers in the area as well.
