Are there any Illinois Mamas here?

Posted by

I am strongly considering homeschooling my son next year or sending him to a private school, depending on finances. I would love to talk to other moms who homeschool in Illinois and any advice they can give me..

We are in Illinois and this is our first year hsing we love it.

I have been trying to find if there are any restrictions on homeschooling-laws etc. Doesn't seem to be too many besides 176 days a year and must teach : Language arts, biological and physical science, math, social sciences, fine arts, health and physical development.

Seems pretty straightforward..have you found any problems so far? Illinois seems so restrictive on so many other issues I feel like there MUST be another"shoe to drop".

Here is a good Illinois Online Homeschool Group. The group is on a forum board for our curriculum, Time4Learning. Even though I would recommend that program to everyone, you don't have to be a member of that curriculum to benefit from all of the information you can get from the forums. The groups are there so members can find other homeschoolers near them, and so they can keep up with different homeschool happenings in Illinois.

You can get info about state laws and requirements...and ask others who are about to homeschool in IL (or those who are just beginning to) how they are getting started.

HTH. :D

I am in Illinois. this is our first full year of homeschooling completely along with finally knowing we will NEVER go back. (thought about it a few years did public then home then public now home for good.) We are a good state to home-school in. I don't have to report anything. This state is really not restrictive at all, very home-school friendly in fact. Where I am there are tons of homeschool groups, and a sports league. I am a secular homeschooler and even though most of the groups are NOT secular there are many that are. If you are within the city of Chicago there is also a free K-12 program

Thanks Amy-

Our area in Northern IL seems to be short on secular groups but it does look like there is a HOUSE group nearby so hopefully it'll be an active group. I'm finding a bit here and a bit there on different sites as to what there is available as for activities for HS kids in my area, and I think it should be doable. I am glad our state is so "hands off" about homeshooling since they are so restrictive in other areas.

Thanks for the info!

OoOo menomonie is pretty close to me. What are the homeschooling groups like?

Lynette
by Bronze Member on May. 12, 2011 at 8:11 PM

The Menomonie group is a secular one. Loud and fun! We meet every Thursday. In the am we do 2 different classes. Then it's lunch. After lunch it's like a massive playdate. So much fun. All types there. Unschoolers included.

Now Homestars in Eau Claire is a larger group out of Bethesda Lutheran Church. They are a Christian group but there is no statement of faith to sign. They are a bit more formal. I enjoyed the group. They also do a yearly used homeschool book/curriculum sale every year open to all.

Then their is the FCHE in Eau Claire, they do have a statement of faith to sign. They also do a track & field day that is open to all homeschoolers in the group or not.

Other things in Eau Claire are 2 different homeschool PE programs, a choir, art classes, spanish classes(for the young set), there is also an online Chippiwa Valley Homeschoolers group that costs $5 a yr to be a part of but it is great for letting you know what's all going on. My middle son takes speech at a local collage where students are working on their masters.

I love love love the FLC in Menomonie, I just "fit" there.

wow how did you find it? I am trying to find homeschoolers in my area and I just cant seem to find groups like that. I think I will check out the Menomonie one though, it sounds great!! Thanks for the tip. Do they meet in the summer too? I think I want to teach year round, four day schedule, and the fifth day a field trip day, then have three weeks off between each season or something like that... still doing my research!
